TIL that Gov. Spanberger gave all state employees an extra 4 hours of leave in honor of Labor Day. That is, all state employees but NOT UVA employees. Why? Because the university "decided not to" (according to the UVA HR rep I spoke to). 🧵

Some faculty say outside groups have targeted them with watchlists, records requests and online attacks — and without collective bargaining, they have few options to ask for greater protections.

insisting on calling every mass day of protest or one-day boycott a "general strike" is not the move. it's good to see people rallying around the cause, it matters, but if you want to be part of a large-scale labor action that shuts down the gears of capital, start by unionizing your workplace!!!

Twice this week I’ve explained that UVA Health employees don’t have things like winter storm hazard pay because in reaction to Black UVA Health employees organizing for better working conditions, in 1947 the General Assembly made collective bargaining illegal for public sector employees in Virginia.

A graph of Covid rates. It's more complex than can be described here, but the important bit is that the rates have gone up a lot since late July, nearly to the heights of last winter.
