The key message is that judging soft interventions only by immediate reductions in car use may underestimate their value; a stage-based approach offers a more sensitive way to assess progress toward lasting behaviour change.

We integrate behavioural stages of change into an agent-based model to capture gradual shifts that conventional measures, such as mode share or travel frequency, may miss.

Our newly published paper asks a simple but important question: are we measuring the impact of soft travel behaviour interventions in the right way? Soft interventions may not shift mode immediately, but they can move people closer to behaviour change. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Yes, absolutely. My point was that even under the best-case conditions in Casey, public transport still does not offer a strong enough comparative advantage over the car. In many areas, the reality is considerably worse in terms of service frequency, which only underlines the scale of the problem.

There are a few routes at 20 min frequencies at certain periods in the day, but yes my point is that that isn't even good enough.

- Half of rural areas lack public transport, leaving many children “trapped” locally. - Cumulative energy and transport poverty compounds disadvantage, independent of household income. - Girls living in rural areas showed the highest mental-health vulnerability.
