she said "you can do anything in fiction as long as the situation afterwards is more interesting that the situation before." since then i have been keeping an eye on character death in fiction. many writers seem to think that character death "raises the stakes" but actually just makes things boring

Agreed. I also feel like, sometimes there's a presumption that a character death will invoke Feels in the reader, and while that's certainly true if your character is at all interesting, it's a super lazy way to evoke feels and will be wasted if the death isn't really part of the overall structure.

I would kind of like to read a lady knight book in this recent trend of adult lady knight books where the lady knight is still a knight at the end instead of deciding she would rather live a less knightly and more domestic life with her love interest... maybe the fourth time will be the charm...?

I'm petty, I'll block anyone that shares anything vaguely Harry Potter related. I unfollowed someone on Goodreads cos it showed them reading one of the books. Get the fuck outta here.

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

Welcome these Sumatran tiger cubs! The sisters are named: Barani ("brave"): The smaller of the two, described as a "spitfire" who constantly initiates play-fights. Malu ("shy or reserved"): The larger sister who frequently seeks out quiet spots in neighboring stalls to nap. [via Fort Worth Zoo]

you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Rozi the cheetah purrs 😻 Sound on for beautiful cheetah purrs! Cats can either roar or purr, they can’t do both. Lions & tigers can roar, but they can’t purr. Cheetahs can purr, but they can’t roar.

Not to mention being constantly told by classmates, TO MY FACE, that profs go easy on girls. The conversations and jokes I overheard. I quit due to burnout bc of the insane workload expected, not sexism. But nonetheless, it was omnipresent.

I studied compsci. There was a class on ethics one year I had high hopes for because it's one hell of an interesting topic and I liked the intersection with humanities. The first lecture, the prof opened with some sexist bullshit. I stopped attending. All the other students at that point were men.

Patina is dry as dust and just might be the dryest ink I have, which is impressive given that I specialize in pastel celadons, but...the colour... 😅 I already used it for a month with a platinum F nib, for which it was a shit match, but I gotta clean out the kaweco M. Wet enough to work I think.

Now I wonder how many other book boxes and other "fancy" editions do this shit. Like I'm not in the market for them (vast majority don't ship to here, even this got stuck at customs), I don't have any points of comparison. But it does make you think, y'know?

(I do not operate heavy machinery. But I have done all the other steps of two different methods. Also messy. And a press is a necessity.) ANYWAY. Professional pet peeves aside. It's enshittification. Cutting costs in a way most people won't notice. That should not happen when you pay extra, dammit.

Para 🌵 @paracactus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Rebinding a hardcover: cut threads, fix with archival tape or paper strips if necessary, sew, glue on endpapers, glue everything onto boards. Can be done at home. Rebinding a paperback: easy disassembly, but putting it back together is a Process that requires heavy machinery to cut it level.

Para 🌵 @paracactus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
And not only are books bound only with a thin layer of glue less durable (any amateur sewn binding holds up better), since they are essentially paperbacks, they are also near impossible to repair. Again, moot point since people don't repair their own books. But as someone who *has* done it. ARGH.

Para 🌵 @paracactus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
It also doesn't even have endbands glued on! That's a purely aesthetic rather than functional complaint but come on! (Works of Vermin by the appropriately named Broken Binding for the curious btw, got it a while ago so it's a moot point, but my friends found my rant this morning interesting, so.)

Para 🌵 @paracactus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Like okay, I don't like the faux-hardcover binding in any case, but with normal "I got a hardcover bc I wanted it on release" boks - fine I guess, costs are rising, etc. But if I get a special signed edition with fancy endpapers, and it's done in the flimsiest cheapest least durable way? Yeah, no.

Para 🌵 @paracactus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Prompted by a conversation on discord, it's heinous that buying a special edition hardcover doesn't even guarantee that the book will have sewn signatures anymore. Just glued like a paperback. I'm a professional bookbinder specializing in repair. This is not a book that'd survive being read a lot 🧵
Hardcover of The Works of Vermin, propped open slightly. There is no endband glued on, and although the orange sprayed edges make it difficult to see, the pages are held together by a thin layer of glue and some paper on top only. Two hardcovers compared. One with signatures and headband on the left, and the orange one with glued pages on the right. There is a very visible difference.

Yep. Or maybe it's just a "not yet." I do like radio as background noise for keeping at least slightly in touch with pop music, the bubble argument is nonsense, but I don't know how the music editors make their choices and also don't care lol It's pretty silly discourse!

Why you should use a PHYSICAL scene separator (e.g. asterisks) in your books instead of an empty space: 1) Some ereader / app somewhere may simply not show the empty space. 2) Some people read on devices with the text REALLY BIG. Your chance of the empty space being at the end of the screen is...

Had similar experiences. In primary school, the school librarian FORCED us to choose from the picture books section even if we could read more difficult books. Aggravating. On the opposite end, high school English teacher allowed me to read openly because. Well. Big fat English SFF books + fluent.

No but seriously, the way this show has me in a fucking chokehold
tumblr post by heyclickadee (deactivated): I love the way The Bad Batch is both a show about a group of adult siblings trying to raise their little sister and a show about someone losing themselves to war. Not even joking, I love the tonal shift. The way the show plays the uncertainty of becoming something you weren’t designed to be against the hopelessness of allowing your design to define you. How none of the characters have the option to make decisions that won’t get people hurt, just a few gray threads self-preservation awash in a tapestry of bad, but most of them are able to find a way to survive and be okay with themselves while others aren’t. How no matter how you choose to hide, whether it’s hiding from the system or hiding in it, the walls will close in on you eventually. The way that the main villain so far is simply a personification of the machine of fascism and how it dehumanizes everyone and everything it touches. The thrill of being free and outliving your purpose, which you were never meant to do, and having the option to live in peace, which you were never meant to have, juxtaposed against the despair of losing yourself so completely that once you have the option to be free you don’t take it, because your prison is all you have left. The dichotomy between a child seeing the world as it is for the first time and the adults around her getting the chance to see it though her eyes, and a man who could see, but refuses to look.
