you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor

Mate, you won't be the prime minister if the polls keep going the way they're going and you get invited to join the coalition as the junior partner.

Moons are mostly named after the consorts or children of the Roman gods the planets are named after. Y'all can't be trusted to say Uranus without snickering, you think you could have dealt with Aeneas?

This is a category error. Lego is not really a kids toy anymore when their bread and butter is $200 sets you can't play with from 40-year-old movies.

an amazing new project launches today in new zealand: people can report sexual harm, and get matched with others who reported the same person. when you report, you get a lawyer - and lawyer-client privilege. for free. i profile the website, technology, charity, & law firm here: www.webworm.co/tika/

This makes me hopeful. This number is aspirational but nowhere near out of reach: a working professional could realistically cash out their 401k and buy off a public official. Owning a senator is more attainable for most Americans than home ownership.

becoming a vulgar rawlsian. the veil of ignorance isn't perfect, but 'is this how you would design things if *you* thought you might end up here?' is a test that way too many people fail. on everything from criminal justice to public transit, across the ideological spectrum.

Some thoughts on Nicky Hager's "Dirty Work: The Taxpayers' Union and New Zealand's Hard Right" which was launched tonight. These thoughts are informed by a research project we did earlier this year looking at NZTU discourses which involved analysing two years of its media releases and other outputs.

for those outside New Zealand: 2 years ago a veiled far-right astroturf org threatened to sue an investigative journalist for a book he was writing about them. He was not writing a book about them, but this incident meant former staff started leaking to him. He used those leaks to write a book.

The most influential thing this very influential film did was banish the credits to the end of the film. Without Star Wars, there would be no Marvel post-credits scene. Would the interconnected metanarratives of that franchise even work without them?

Yellow Guy “No”
Red Guy “USE ME”

People tend to be siloed. This is a bit off piste but in tech startup land people are noticing that VC funding is drying up and navel gazing as to why. And I'm like guys, one of your largest (if not the largest) source of risk capital is on fire right now.

This trope also really misses how diverse languages like "French" "German" and "English" were before early modern standardisation efforts. Chaucer jokes about a character that speaks Norman French, but has no idea what people are saying in Parisian French. Caxton has that joke about eyren.

Crayfish is a wonderful example of an eggcorn - mishearing or reinterpreting a word to fit with your understanding of the world. The original Middle English word was Crevise, from the French Crevice, but it lives in the water, so they must mean it's some kind of fish, right?
