People keep asking me if the BLS jobs data is being tampered with for political reasons, and given the strength of other sources in September it's time to joke "yes, they're faking data to make the job market look worse than it actually is" [JOKE!!!]

I keep going back to this and it just feels like a really callous dismissal of lived experiences of people like myself: having to manage quarterly pe marks to counter the rise in wacc... you know how annoying it is to change a biz plan in october??

it would be better for stable viewing if the polariscope had *two* little risers with adjustable arms, one for the the interference sphere, one for a little stone holder clip like on a darkfield microscope stage. though this would make manipulation of these items even slower 🙃

still trying to figure out conoscopy. well and other stuff. i got many things! spectroscope with a turntable that does both reflectance and transmission, little calcite dichroscope fitting one’s ring finger, different lighting and magnification to make the results of a london dichro show up clearer…

You can now pick up the Meta/Blue Owl Project Beignet bonds (secured, rated A+) at a 7.3% yield, or about the same as Mexico’s (unsecured, BBB-rated) US dollar bonds at a similar maturity.

this is just incredible. and really the blame starts and ends with the talk show host and/or premier of alberta. an optional, discretionary choice to hold this plebiscite (…or ten) that no one was asking for and few understand.

this marvellous software promises relief from tedium and that one will be focussing more on what matters. suppose nothing matters except as means to micro-lot gins one cannot buy without travelling countries and veblen utility in ever-better portuguese towels and the pretension to make them legible.

i am not sure if i am to be flattered that i am highly proficient at information design and can convey meaning absent any context, or annoyed that this no longer matters

and from there, simple questions: what are these objects, why are they in this order, are there any gaps, do the gaps themselves contain any information well this software had a pretty good handle on that considering it cannot handle the material. VRAM you said it runs on? how much can i buy.

i tried something i thought this software may be excellent at to see what was up. scanned a page of a… technical… exhibit of canadian fiscals from late 1870s negotiable instruments that is beyond published research. blanked out all text and diagrams. the only information was hierarchy and sequence.

appearing reasonably intelligent (i’m thoroughly mediocre thanks) got me out of the vagaries of circumstance and i’d like that open to other, younger versions of myself (no one is younger than me) if similarly motivated by only pecuniary and domineering interests and don’t actually care much

fantastic software that has made my party trick of identifying bird feathers, probable migratory destinations of that population of that bird given [location] at [time], rambling about trivalent europium, the treaty of seeb, and handle on TSX firms down to ~$125MM market cap far less interesting

like many people google identifies as "podcaster and former advisor," i often talk about trivalent europium ions – and not about work – at my gracious dining table. i am sure the millers are the same way. what an excellent exchange of ideas.

Andrew Papenheim @papenhe.im · 19/09/2026
someone independently observing the red phosphors scene could come to the conclusion that they should have exposure to europium in a jurisdiction that does not produce much of it, co-incidental to decisions taken by the US executive with price impact. yes,

katie, specifically, has disclosed the largest single-name in her IRA as the REEs miner in california that popped when the US president announced it would be (a) partially nationalized and (b) offered price protection so idk maybe don't do stuff like that. it looks like what it looks like, and such

Andrew Papenheim @papenhe.im · 19/09/2026
this would all be much easier if the US – i welcome their firms and individuals, who are easy to deal with, to buy things at world prices – was not framing the good sense of its protectorate on the sill of the leeward antilles exclusively in terms of below-market rates on crude oil

the excellent news: that observation is highly diagnostic! not excellent: diagnostic for quartz first time we've talked about conoscopes on this website apparently. so let's have at it. i suck at this. how does one grow to suck less at using a conoscope.

letting out a triumphant "yes!" (sanitized, this is a family website) that i resolved an optic figure with an interference sphere groaning that it's an airy's spiral in what was supposed to be a heliodor

we are all adults here so surely it is unnecessary to state i would not be particularly enthused about chinese or russian FDI in greenland and instead find the notion that a third country is claiming a veto on inbound investment to be unusual and extraordinary

they cannot stop voting in the affirmative for vague and ranging tariff legislation, containing no restrictions defining facilitation, in the middle of this farce that many of them claim to be against.
