And I don’t mean this as something explicitly malicious so much as a lack of forethought. Like I’ve done academic surveys where it wasn’t clear until near the end it should only have been U.S. residents despite sharing the survey online, because Americans usually don’t have to think about that

“Anti-trans laws = bad” is a common sense conclusion. The work that was done wasn’t just done to say that. The work also couldn’t have been done 10 years ago because the acceleration of anti-trans laws didn’t happen 10 years ago. This work is incredibly up-to-date and responsive to the moment

I think it’s worth reading the original paper before saying that researchers have an inability to draw common sense conclusions. Exposure to news about anti-trans bills was a stronger predictor of psychological distress than actual everyday discrimination, and state-level support unrelated

The supposed rationale for throwing trans people under the bus is that you gain more voters, even if you lose the trans people, so if that's not true you're just doing it for the love of the game

Anyway there’s a special kind of violence that researchers from marginalized communities have to endure when coverage of their work gets brushed off as being from some outsider who just “discovered” the obvious rather than someone from the community trying to bring attention to an issue

The amount of vitriol this article has gotten is ridiculous and it’s a student journalist? God forbid a student journalist highlights how the government is threatening to slash funds to ensure compliance
The participants in Wall's study were all above the age of 18, but Eli Coston, Associate Chair of the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies at VCU, said these laws affect trans minors as well.

Coston said that for trans youth in particular, the most common treatment to receive is starting puberty blockers, a medication that stops the human body from producing the main two sex hormones, estrogen and testosterone. They said that anti-trans legislation can put transgender youth's access to these medications at risk.According to Coston, hospitals at universities such as VCU or University of Virginia rely on federal funds to provide a wide variety of services, not just gender affirming care.

"By continuing to provide gender affirming care to those under the age of 19, they would risk losing funding that supports all of their patients," Coston said.

Gender affirming care for minors is still legal in Virginia, though most providers who did provide that type of care no longer provide it because they are major hospital systems, according to Coston.

"There are still providers that provide those services, but they're largely independent and don't rely on federal funds," Coston said.

In addition to that work which goes beyond “trans legislation = bad” @catherinesjwall.com also debunks ROGD, which is what anti-trans advocates have used as a basis to push their agenda to deny trans healthcare: psycnet.apa.org/record/2027-...
Abstract: The rates of persistence and desistance in transgender identities (broadly defined) are among the most common rhetorical points in legal and ethical debates over transgender health. Originally popularized by a researcher’s blogpost, political and legal action restricting gender-affirming care claim that 60%–90% of youth presenting for care “desist” from a transgender identity on the basis of 11 informally reviewed data sets. Our multimethod synthesis of this literature, in contrast, uses and finds (a) a series of meta-analytic estimates suggesting very heterogeneous and fickle estimates of desistance both from these studies alone and when supplemented by more recent samples, (b) simulations suggesting that volunteer bias compromises how informative these estimates can be, and (c) a qualitative review revealing serious conceptual problems, outdated assumptions, and substantial methodological limitations. These analyses undermine the popularized “60%–90%” desistance estimate that commonly underlies policy efforts intended to restrict access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Attempts to justify such legislative and health care policy initiatives with this ostensible desistance rate reflect, at best, a misunderstanding of the nature of the scientific literature and, at worst, a motivated reading of the scientific literature.

We are conceding the very possibility of democratic governance to allow a corporation to determine the moral rights of a machine. surely moral concern for actual humans and how we relate is better preserved democratically than it is by a corporation.
