Before we take the nuclear option of separation, maybe we can consider fixing the voting system that alienates large swathes of the voting population, and leaves them feeling underrepresented in Parliament and the Legislature

Alberta Voices—David Blain: Ask why Albertans feel unheard
Have Albertans actually tried fixing how our votes count? Fair voting is a faster, less costly, and more durable answer to alienation.

Fair Vote Canada 🗳️🍁 @fairvote.ca · 19/03/2026
As @acoyne.bsky.social writes in The Globe and Mail, minority governments often deliver more legitimate, negotiated outcomes. So why do we keep producing false majority governments with less than 40% of the vote? Proportional representation would make cooperation the norm.
Screenshot of a The Globe and Mail opinion article by Andrew Coyne titled “A minority government is best suited to manage Canada in a crisis.” Below the headline is a photo of politicians in the House of Commons, with one speaking and another seated behind him. The visible text argues that majority governments often do not represent a true majority of voters, noting recent governments formed with less than 40% support. It states that minority governments have produced important policy achievements because legislation must be negotiated rather than imposed, leading to more durable, broadly supported outcomes.

Proportional representation is not a leap into the unknown. It is a proven system used around the world, and more Canadians are recognizing that we can make it work too.
Screenshot of a National Post article. Visible text includes “NATIONAL POST”; “NDP leadership candidate Avi Lewis. PHOTO BY SPENCER COLBY/THE CANADIAN PRESS/FILE”; “Chris Selley: Electoral reform rears its head again. This time, we should welcome it”; “Anyone who believes in anything halfway bold or outside the dead-centre should be talking about proportional representation”; “By Chris Selley”; “Published Jan 13, 2026”; “4 minute read”; “39 Comments”; “PR would certainly be a “big change,” but many Canadians are convinced it’s entirely possible, despite Canada’s general aversion to “big changes” of any sort. It’s certainly not impossible Canada might implement PR at the federal level.”; “Anyone who believes in anything halfway bold or outside the dead-centre should be talking about it.” Yellow header, white background, stacked panels with photo above text.

The case for proportional representation is undeniable. CTV reports on how our democracy distorting voting system fuels regional divisions, and how proportional representation can fix it. @mark-carney.bsky.social, will you champion a system where every vote truly counts? #cdnpoli

Dear Americans: We, in Canada, are not boycotting US products, cancelling travel plans, and reorienting our economy towards other countries because of the tariffs, as annoying as they are. We are doing these things because our sovereignty is being threatened and our country disrespected. Period.

A data visualization graphic titled "Which voters back proportional representation?" shows the results of a national poll conducted by EKOS Research. A large circular chart indicates that 68% of Canadians support proportional representation, while smaller charts display support levels by party: 72% of Liberal voters, 54% of Conservative voters, 83% of NDP voters, 87% of Green voters, 74% of Bloc voters, and 77% of PPC voters. The chart uses green for support, red for opposition, and gray for "don't know." The EKOS logo appears in the bottom left, and the website www.fairvote.ca/prpoll2025 is displayed at the bottom.

transience ----------- patreon.com/nhoj
4 panel comic

P1: a lone silhouetted figure stands on a grassy hilltop, staring at a towering column of cloud, dominating a pink-purple sky

P2: closeup of the figure, whonis a young guy wearing a jacket and beanie. He holds up a phone in his right hand, and ponders: "if I don't take a photo of this moment, and share it online, will it even matter?"

P3: A beat, as the POV draws back to show the guy in full, as he looks up in silence. The hand holding the phone has dropped to his side.

P4: the POV has moved high in the air, and the guy has been reduced to a tiny faceless figure. He finishes his thought: "on the other hand, maybe the transience of this moment is what gives it meaning..."

A gust of wind whips past, with a "FWOOOOOO"

A beautiful (and true) poem 💛

“If Adam Picked the Apple”
Danielle Coffyn

If Adam Picked the Apple
there would be a parade,
a celebration,
a holiday to commemorate
the day he sought enlightenment.
We would not speak of
temptation by the devil, rather,
we would laud Adam’s curiosity,
his desire for adventure
and knowing.
We would feast
on apple-inspired fare:
tortes, chutneys, pancakes, pies.
There would be plays and songs
reenacting his courage.

But it was Eve who grew bored,
weary of her captivity in Eden.
And a woman’s desire
for freedom is rarely a cause
for celebration.
