I loved her stuff for Defector, but the fact that she wasn’t regularly publishing criticism in some Canadian publication is as big an indictment of the industry as anything she wrote. 46 is way too young, what a loss for everyone who knew her. And what a tragedy to lose her voice.

Just so very sad to learn of Soraya’s passing. She was one of one and a truly brilliant critic and writer who weighed in fearlessly on the state of Canadian arts and media. She also supported me through the trials of freelance life and I held her generosity closely.

In January 2024, a cold snap devastated B.C.’s wine industry. To help, the government created a program that allowed B.C. wineries to import U.S. grapes. It saved the industry, but now that same lifeline is threatening to put some wineries out of business. thenarwhal.ca/bc-wine-taxes/
