Oil and gas companies have been lobbying for input on Alberta's caribou ranges for at least a decade. In my first story for @nationalobserver.com, I look into how plans for the threatened species have been influenced by some of the largest voices in the oil and gas industry, rather than science.

Federally mandated plans for Alberta's caribou ranges are years behind schedule — and the latest drafts promise to help double oil and gas production. I dug into how the plans better reflect a decade of lobbying from the oil and gas industry, rather than the best science for caribou protection.

Alberta is finally releasing long-awaited plans for caribou habitat -- with an emphasis on doubling oil and gas production. I dug into how the drafts reflect a decade of lobbying from the oil and gas industry, rather than the best available science for recovery. bit.ly/47mBTn8

John Pomeroy wants you to know that devastating events like this are about more than melting glaciers -- they are about the cryosphere. That's everything frozen, like permafrost, snow and ice. And we are all downstream of it. I spoke to Pomeroy about the state of ice in Canada for The Narwhal.

Arts funding is shrinking, inflation has soared and competition for grants is tougher than ever. For @thetyee.ca I wrote about the financial challenges facing Canada's literary world. Thank you to everyone who spoke with me, and Jackie Wong for the assignment and editing.

The All-seasons Resort Act can fast-track some large-scale developments in the Rockies – and it starts with a land designation. Yesterday I shared a story I wrote about the first application underway to build under the act. It's a dense topic, so here's an explainer about the act itself.

My latest for The Narwhal. A proposed ski resort has people wondering where the water will come from – and more. It's the first application under the province's new All-season Resorts Act, a law that puts decision-making power for some large-scale projects into the hands of the Toursim Ministry.

❗On Friday evening, the CAJ learned that journalist Rachel Gilmore had recently been approached in public by individuals linked to, or implicated in, an investigation she had written, and was published by The Tyee that focused on white nationalists. loom.ly/z22FRzg

One more in a series of climate change related stories from the guiding community. I'm filled with gratitude for everyone who took the time to let me in on their world.

In October, @amberbracken.bsky.social and I followed photographers Jim Elzinga and Roger Vernon deep inside the Athabasca Glacier. The duo is capturing the beauty of our glaciers before they disappear. The experience was beautiful, impactful and heartbreaking.

Glaciers in Canada are melting faster than ever – and in unexpected ways. Guides don’t need a scientific paper to tell them the natural world is changing. They face it on the job every day. For The Narwhal, I spoke with guides about managing the risks of an increasingly unpredictable landscape.
