Really cannot recommend enough having a diary or journal in which to write posts, instead of posting all of them to a public platform.

My seventy-seven-year-old father put his reading glasses on to help my mother do the buttons on the back of her dress… —Jackie Kay, “George Square” from LIFE MASK, @bloodaxebooks.bsky.social 2005 Today, 21 September, is the International Day of Peace #peace #poem #poetry www.un.org/en/observanc...
George Square
by Jackie Kay

My seventy-seven-year-old father
put his reading glasses on
to help my mother do the buttons
on the back of her dress.
‘What a pair the two of us are!’
my mother said, ‘Me with my sore wrist,
you with your bad eyes, your soft thumbs!’

And off they went, my two parents
to march against the war in Iraq,
him with his plastic hips, her with her arthritis
to congregate at George Square where the banners
waved at each other like old friends, flapping,
where they’d met for so many marches over their years,
for peace on earth, for pity’s sake, for peace, for peace.

Been a long time since I read a book so slowly and thoughtfully and enjoyed every single sentence.

I'm in Scotland. I know patriots have had to leave their homeland throughout history for a variety of reasons. But I don't think I knew until having visited the country even a fraction of what they must have felt at what they were having to give up. How could you ever bear to leave such a place?

Bought a small sketchbook from R Jackson & Sons’ in Liverpool and decided to try and fill it entirely with drawings of Liverpool. Managed to fill half in a day. I’ll go back and fill the second half on my next visit.

Went to my first powwow today. #CaldwellFirstNation I learned that seniors are treated with reverence, all are welcome, air conditioning is unnecessary, drumming and chanting are primal, and dancing is fantastic.

Some nights I need music that hurts, guitar strings dragged across something open, a voice soft enough that I stop holding on. I wail until my chest gives out, until there's finally room for the grief to build instead of sit, heavy, inside me. Then I let it happen again. Again. Again. #poetry

My third Special Home Bird (2014) is on Channel 4 on Friday and 4Seven on Saturday. Photo by Andy Hollingworth Graphics by Gary Williams
It’s me in a black dress with short brown hair and brown glasses. The background is blue and pink and looks like the image of a house. I’m talking and pointing. The text in a pink and blue box says Home Bird Channel 4 - Friday 7th 11:05pm. 4Seven - Saturday 8th 10pm.

Last night, sleep proved elusive. Though I knew old regrets and painful memories served no purpose, they kept returning. The more I tried to let them go and return to the present, the more persistent they became. By morning, this poem had written itself. #poetry
