In my first-year college writing course about AI, I made a chatbot that could help students "stress test" their arguments by providing potential counterarguments. The class was about AI so it made sense to try it. It wasn't bad at the task but when my students saw that it didn't give answers and /1
Researchers from the University of Toronto followed students in 18 Tennessee middle schools for two years, from 2024 to 2026. Almost all the students tried Khanmigo at first. And many tried to get the AI assistant to spit out the answer. But when Khanmigo refused and instead asked questions or offered hints, students largely stopped using it.

“We observe how students actually used the AI tutor, and the answer is: not much,” Philip Oreopoulos and Nina Low, the researchers, wrote in their draft paper, circulated by the National Bureau of Economic Research in August. “Seeking help with one’s own confusion remained a choice, and most students declined it most of the time.”

Key Takeaways: Contrary to popular belief, AI agents do not automatically learn from interactions. Once deployed, their internal models are "frozen" unless explicitly engineered otherwise.

This is the thing: the work of doing work that could be done by AI is often the "important work" that AI promises to save you the time to do. We know what this work is, as @profmarylewis.bsky.social notes below. But our students won't necessarily, unless they actually get to do it themselves.

There's a constant AI-washing of terms so these companies can claim they're solving a problem that doesn't exist with AI. Static analysis/formal methods also put forward suggestions, have they even used these tools? Claude Code may also generate up to 90% insecure code (arxiv.org/pdf/2512.03262).

As a formal methods PhD, it's embarrassing for Anthropic to incorrectly describe static analysis in their Claude Code Security announcement. Security and formal methods engineers already have data "reasoning" tools, this isn't the bottleneck, false positives, which LLMs absolutely have, is.

I have to give Anthropic credit for recognizing that deploying unreliable AI in AWS is not strategic for the future of AI. But there's a very fine line between DSS and AWS in practice due to automation bias, if they don't believe it's reliable for the latter, it's not reliable for the former either.
