Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 16hThis is a very revealing and informative conversation/co-interview with Brad Schiff, head of animation at Laika and James Ortiz who was the puppeteer of Rocky from Project Hail Mary. Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 18hI've always been a modeller or 2D artist by trade. So I've been messing around with polygons for ages. I've always been fascinated about how these funky shader effects are created in games. It's an amazing and fascinating subject. 031

Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Hot Damn! The previous film was amazing on so many levels. It wasn't just a monster beat-em-up. It's human sequences had real drama, character and pathos. The effects were astounding. A worthy successor to the original movie! 100

Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Another animation test. This is pretty close to the shot in the film (the whole thing is under 10 minutes long and all electronic, is it really 'film'?). I'm refining basic animation as I've never done anything this complex before. 011
Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Oh dear. Things are actually progressing on 'A Dog Named Fate'. It's sat there and progressed in drips and drabs for a decade. 152
Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 22/09/2026This man basically designed Hollywood for decades. He started work on Sleeping Beauty for God’s sake. He’s also been a political cartoonist, secret document courier and designed an album cover for Jefferson Airplane. 0104

Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 20/09/2026GIMP is great for what it says it is. I use it all the time - even on Windows. One thing it is not is a photoshop ‘killer’. Apart from its UI being a middle finger to PS users, it’s nearly useless for print work. For general image tweaking, it’s great. 041

Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Oh Hell yeah! It's about time Derby realised that it has a few cultural icons on it's timeline. Lara was a huge part of gaming history and now the city are going to acknowledge that! Now we just need statues of James Bond and Duke Nukem put up to commemorate Eurocom! www.bbc.com/news/article... 010

Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Cycles and Eevee are amazing. I still miss YAFARAY though. Back before cycles came along, it was so far ahead of Blender's internal scanline renderer. Much praise for other renderers of the time such as Indigo, Lux Render and Octane. 000
Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 12/09/2026After a decade of interruptions, detours and procrastination, I've finally bit the bullet and tried to rig and animate the characters for my personal project: A Dog Named Fate. I'm finally getting stuff done. I've looked back over my project files and there are playblast animations of scenes from 2015. Back then it took 20 minutes to output a frame. 141

Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 06/09/2026This is part of what I've been doing over the last few months. All the design work was done in Blender (yes, I'm silly). I had to experiment with printing clear panels in PETG. I'd made a render-only model a while back, but making it printable was a job. Making this 'real' was a lot of fun. 010
Owen Richards @owenrichardscgi.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I think if they told you that you'd have days like this as an animator, I think less people would heed the calling. I was fixing some weight painting on my character, went to dinner, came back, logged in and: YEAAAAAHHHH! 010
