It usually crops up (falls out of the sky?) when I teach GPs with my FM groups. I love it as a slightly off-piste (Sorry. Couldn't resist) task.

And immediately discovers he's wrong... alas. Single arrows are used too. However, this cheat sheet (found on the web) may be useful.
Logical connections cheat sheet containing Not P, P and Q, P or Q, If P then Q, P if and only if Q

Without being too emphatic, I'm reasonably sure the type of arrows matter. "If A then B" and "If and only if" use these arrows:
An arrow pointing right with two parallel lines leading to the arrow head.

And the same parallel lines with an arrow head on either end.

An Old Akkadian school text problem; only 4000 years old. I think they were interested in how to partition non-rectangular fields for inheritance purposes ... so for 2 brothers say, in the case of this problem. #UKMathsChat #iTeachMath
Old Akkadian school text IM 58045 showing a trapezium partitioned into two equal areas. The parallel sides of the trapezium are 17 and 7 units and the perpendicular distance between these sides is 12 units. The partition is made parallel to the sides of 17 and 7 units. Find the length of the partition line and its distance from the side of 17 units.

I'm intrigued by this. Have you approached with trying factor pairs and spotting that they work? By substitute, do you mean e.g. y=15/x ? Did you ask them to find another good circle/reciprocal pair?

Coincidentally, I've been linking all of my year 11's quadratic work to sketching graphs today. We explored x=0, y=0 (and hence solving, usually by factorising) and completing the square for min/max. There's a brilliant @draustinmaths.com worksheet that I then gave them to practice. Small steps 😁

I feel that therr's benefit to persuading pupils to ask themselves, "What percentage am I starting with?". For all the easier questions, you start with 100%. For the more challenging, you don't. May come to nothing, but it perhaps prompts thought.

I'm all for not having to have an "aside" to work out c. The y-y1 method means that the working can be done without a break. It also links beautifully with transformation of graphs.

It may also be the fact that the AS material is a subset of the A level material, so there is a larger spread of collisions that the AS spec can choose a smaller proportion of. Not sure if that makes sense. My brain is mushed from last minute timetabling changes.

over-drawn.bsky.social @over-drawn.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
One might argue that FM2 has the same problem, but with CofM. I quite like the collisions work and it was fun to see a bit of the old M4 course making an appearance. At least no one suggested closest approach made a reappearance 🫣

We do FM1 and FS1, but we've offered extra modules to suitably motivated (nutty) pupils, so FP1 and FM2 have been taught here. The combination seems to offer a good balance. I've taught FM1, FM2 as a combination which I really enjoyed and played well to a mostly engineering aspiring set.

They do integrate. The MS allows for complete muppetry in terms of what value ends up in front of e^(-0.5t), as long as you don't adjust the e^(-0.5t) itself, then lets you know the correct coefficient of e^(-0.5t) is (+)4. Hastily scribbled below.
A somewhat rushed response to an integration of six minus two lots of e to the negative a half t between t=0 and t=2ln(2) wrt t

Two corners of the large yellow hexagon, and one corner of each of the other two hexagons, lie on the circle. All the hexagons are regular.

The worst set of conceptions for direction always seem to occur in lift problems, or when the word deceleration is used. Woe betide any negative deceleration users 🤣🤣🤣

I certainly use language like, "we have to split this force in such a way that one component is parallel to the slope and the other perpendicular", which lends itself to some nice triangles. One could produce lots of *force triangles* in different orientations and ask which are equivalent (* yuk) 😁

In terms of basic kinematics, pupils are mostly fine with velocity and acceleration having a direction, but it takes longer to embed displacement, both in terms of direction and difference from distance travelled.
