Norman Lear remained convinced until the end that All in the Family could be be made today (whether that today was the 1990s or the 2020s). The problem, Lear recognized, was not "bias in the media" or "liberal policies," but executives afraid of risks and underestimating the audience.

Heartwarming look at Rob Reiner's remarkable career @sepinwall.bsky.social My only note: the famous "a sock and a sock or a sock and a short"-scene was the result not of the excellent writers but of Reiner and O'Connor playing around with the characters.

"The two actors together were explosively funny, and the dynamic between the characters was so elementally funny that the writers could have them argue over virtually anything and generate huge laughs. It didn't have to be about politics or sociology. It could be something as simple as the proper order in which to put on your socks and shoes."
