Good morning (it's still morning, right?). I'm currently having a fun time reading "Murder on Sex Island" by Jo Firestone.
The cover of Murder on Sex Island A Luella Van Horn Mystery by Jo Firestone. There are stylised palm trees, birds, and a bright yellow sun on the cover, and beween the palm trees is a blue bathtub with a red arm resting on the side of it. There is a blurb from Stephen Colbert which reads "I'm so sad Sex Island isn't a real TV show, because I'd make a fantastic host."

Happy Monday! I'm reading Service by Lauren Mooney, the vibes are spooktastic and the cultural commentary is real.
The cover of Service by Lauren Mooney showing an arched window with a housemaid visible behind it holding a tray and drinking from a goblet. The cover has blurbs from Glen James Brown: "Switchblade-sharp fiction for the work-life unbalanced" and Ella Risbridger: "I could not put it down. And then I could not turn off the light."

Fair play to you! You can be the counterbalance to my Lidl trip yesterday evening. Went in for heavy-duty bin bags (for the cat litter). Ended up with chocolate coated custard creams and red bean mochi in my basket alongside the bin bags. I wasn't even hungry while shopping

Lucked into a proof copy of Public Access Afterworld by Jane Schoenbrun and it's an addictive read. Anyone who has enjoyed their films will eat it up. Gonna be buying a hard copy of this when it comes out next month.
The cover of Public Access Afterworld by Jane Schoenbrun featuring a grid of old CRT screens with images coming through the static. It has blurbs from SenLin Yu: "I stayed up all night binge-reading"; and Torrey Peters: "The literary voice I've been famished for".

Finally got around to starting Lost Lambs by Madeline Cash. It's fun so far, have only just gotten to the Lost Lambs part.
The cover of Lost Lambs by Madeline Cash. The title, author's names and the words "a novel" are scrawled in all caps in crayon and there is a cartoon of a young girl recoiling from a gnat in the lower left corner.

Snagged myself a proof copy of Hernan Diaz's Ply. Was a bit slow to start but it has picked up and I'm fully engrossed now.
The cover of Ply by Hernan Diaz. It has a stylized image of a building overrun by plants on it and a blurb from David Mitchell who says "Ply is majestic"

I'm reading Steph Cha's Your House Will Pay which was one of the books on the recent NYT thrillers of the decade list that I had never heard of. It is (unsurprisingly) very good
The cover of Your House Will Pay by Steph Cha. It's got a stylized picture of palm trees seen through a chain-link fence with something red dangling from the fence. There's a blurb from Attica Locke that reads "Steph Cha has taken a dark moment in Los Angeles's violent history and cracked it wide open, creating a prism of understanding"

Blunt Instrument by Amy Bloom - turns out she is also amazing at writing crime novels.

You went to WHERE? To see WHOM? What even is a "Meg Stalter"?! Kaliyo is displeased by me having had a vacation that did not involve her.
A small white cat sitting tall on a polka-dotted cushion with an expression of extreme distaste. She doesn't know or care who Mary Todd Lincoln was but she may forgive me for going to see a show on Broadway because I also brought her and her brother some very fancy cat food.

If one is pogoing at a gig in one's 50's, one should probably remember that there is a long walk after the gig that one's ancient and fucked-up knees are also gonna have to handle. Wet Leg was totally worth it tho.

It was inevitable, wasn't it🙄 Of course the Telegraph would run with something like this👇 So let's remove some of the rose-tinted spectacles and also look at some of that data comparing 1976 with modern heat waves Because the 1976 nostalgia porn is wearing a bit thin at this stage 🧵1/23
Telegraph headiline:

"Heatwave hysterics wouldn't have lasted a day in 1976", overlaid with a bold “MONK DEBUNKED” stamp.

I was working from home today but left for a little while to have lunch with a friend. When I came home both cats were waiting for me, and then proceeded to follow me around for an hour to be sure I wasn't going to abseil out the kitchen window on them or something. They dislike RTO intensely.

My digital copy of A1 Deadline landed in my inbox this morning and I felt exactly the same excitement as 17 year old me running into Forbidden Planet for the latest issue did. I've missed it so much, really looking forward to getting my mitts on the physical copy.

Kaliyo approves of YouTube videos as long as they have cats and chickens in them. She'll come running as soon as she hears Rewilding Jude's voice and settle in to watch. #cats

After half an hour of chasing the dangly feather toy, sometimes the kitties just want to wind down by watching their stories. They LOVE Simon's Cat on YouTube.
Two cats perched on different levels of a tall cat tree, both looking with interest at something out of frame to the right. On the tallest platform is Smudge, a black and white cat, who looks like he's smiling. On the platform below him is Kaliyo, a white cat, who is getting ready to jump down and bat-bat at the wall the cartoon is being projected on. She believes all entertainment is interactive.

I love my itsy-bitsy teeny weeny little ebook-areenie. (Kindle Paperwhite for scale).
An XTEINK X3 showing the cover of Kate Folk's Sky Daddy sitting on top of a Kindle Paperwhite showing the cover of Murder Bimbo by Rebecca Novak. The X3 is a little over a quarter the size of the Paperwhite. Both books are excellent, BTW.

Smudge just appeared beside me and dropped a chunk of wholemeal soda bread at my feet. I think he wants me to believe he was driven to foraging for food, but he's had two meals already today. The bread has been confiscated, I am not that easy a mark. Bless him for trying, though.

The many faces of Smudge, elegant gentle kitty and utter doofus.
A black and white cat sits in front of a computer. He's wearing a blue and white bow tie and looks both fancy and elegant. Two cats in an armchair. The same black and white cat is on his back, rear paws akimbo and his front paws looking like they're attempting some kind of dance move. His white sister looks down on him disadainfully.

Just home from my LA adventure. While I was away the kitties were minded by their lovely Uncle Paul. Smudge even deigned to accept pets from him. Kaliyo is so happy to see me that she has not yelled at me yet and is sitting inches from my elbow as I type, purring madly.

The cats were amused by watching me spend half an hour wrestling with sisal twine to do a spot repair on the cat tree. It didn't have twine all the way up its legs (odd design decision IMO) and has been punished for it. Smudge has just now tested the repair and found it satisfactory.

One of my fave things this Christmas was my mum (at my sister's request) buying my nephews matching baby dolls and pushchairs (strollers). They are almost 2 and almost 4, and they were screaming with excitement when they opened them. My mum went from being baffled to being overjoyed in 30 seconds.

Showed Kaliyo some possums on YouTube. Her reaction was basically "WHAT?!"
A small white cat looking confused and disappointed by the existence of possums and me inflicting them on her when she thought I was going to play her a cat video. It's okay, she got her cat video, but not gonna lie I'd been hoping the possums would enchant her.
