Just like with health insurance, if it's that hard to get what you have a right to, then the function of the system is to withhold and not grant access.

there's no reason for any line at any polling place. we are a massively wealthy country; voting is extremely important. providing sufficient voting facilities should be a baseline expectation of everyone in a democracy.

To these people, the point of political office is corruption. It's not a fringe benefit. It's what they came for. Take it away, and they wouldn't bother being involved at all.

We need open-source social media, controlled by the users. They're a public utility at this point. It's long past time. We cannot have our ability to communicate, especially between government and the people, throttled by private companies.

Y'all should know the play by now. They start off with whatever seems the most socially acceptable kink to cry bloody murder over, then it's just a hop and a skip and a jump to everything suddenly being criminalized. Kink content is important. Even the kinks you don't like. Remember that.

the decision has been made to revert “the arts” as a category of human activity to the sole province of second sons and daughters of wealth. no funding for arts degrees at state schools. it’s a toy for rich people again. pricing the poors out of human expression is a feature and not a bug.

There's a conservative bias at outlets like the NYT, specifically bc they're terrified of being perceived as biased towards Democrats/liberalism, so they take conservatives' word for it and overcorrect. It's obvious and maddening.

In my Stop the Presses newsletter a few months ago, I used a hurricane metaphor to explain why it’s wrong for major media to report on Trump’s authoritarian symptoms but not diagnose the disease. www.stopthepresses.news/p/the-media-...
Imagine a hurricane approaching the coast. News organizations report that winds are increasing, heavy rain is starting to fall, barometric pressure is dropping, people are being urged to evacuate and shop owners are boarding up their windows. But the news outlets carefully avoid using the word “hurricane.”

They might tell themselves, “We said there was a big storm coming and people were urged to leave. Everyone should have figured out it was a hurricane.”

But that’s not human nature. It’s human nature to think, “We can ride this out. It’s a big storm – but it’s not a hurricane.”

This morning I re-watched my video argument with the NY Times' Patrick Healy, and it's clear that the Times believes if it says explicity that the Trump regime is assaulting democracy, that would undermine its work to investigate how the regime is assaulting democracy. What an absurd position.

the NYT believes that the only valid criticisms of Trump are those from the right. they present that as unbiased or uniquely truthful, but of course it just means that you're privileging the perspectives of Nazis. that makes you less insightful, not more.

Working for Trump is akin to a pivot to Christian rock: once you make that shift, you're in an alternative media universe, and you're never coming back. This woman will have a career in fascist propaganda if she wants it. I hope there's enough of a thread of integrity left in her that she doesn't.

A thought occurred to me tonight. Authoritarians, according to research and everyday observation, either want to bow down to a fuhrer or *be* the fuhrer. For them, it's one or the other. Hence, how they fight like cats in a bad. Also, hence Trump's slathering obsession with Putin and Kim.

In that case, FWIW (free advice is worth what you paid for it), you might want to look at the Gnome desktop environment. It comes with Fedora and Debian. It's a lot like OSX, except IMO executed *correctly* rather than turned into a mechanism for extraction.
