So bottom line, the best method to prevent suicide from my experience is to just be there for someone throughout their worst moments. By doing so, you remain an invaluable lifeline for someone who previously felt like they had none. Stay safe, stay sober, and most importantly, stay breathing.

None of this, though, really shakes of the constant existential guilt I feel, for failing at life and being an unemployed bum living at home. The only thing that really does help is all the people who still remain in my life regardless. Without them, I’d be hanging from a $20 climbing rope by now.

The only kind of therapy I can really afford after being unemployed for so long is the the occasional guy passing by with the ice cream cart. I have filed for unemployment and I am working on getting my driver’s license so hopefully that helps shake things up.

I’ve called 988 plenty of times, and while they’re initially very helpful and supportive, their words ring more and more hollow the more you hear them. They’ll learn about you, hear your problem, and then work with you to create a short term plan that prevents suicide and a long term plan.

Not gonna lie, living with parents who still think you’re this golden child is a fate worse than death because not only do I consistently fail to leave the nest but I’m a financial burden on them both, as well as an emotional one on everybody who gets close to me. My exes made this crystal clear.

I’ve tried to escape my situation. My 11-month gig was one attempt. I tried moving in with romantic partners I picked up during said stint but they recently painted the walls with my blood labeling me everything under the sun. Any attempt to move in with friends requires a job. Thus I am stuck here.

4 months later and I’m still looking for a job. I’ve taken to going in person recently but everyone tells me to apply online so I don’t steal their job. Yet, because I have no job and am living with my parents, it’s an endless cycle of failure, the gods themselves laughing at my every struggle.

By the time that I’d finally quit my job, I’d held a knife to my wrist probably at least a dozen times in my apartment. I was suicidal back in college but never really had the means or a plan. Back at [company], I acquired my means, but I could never bring myself to do it because of human instinct.

Keep in mind, when I was working my L4 gig, I’d moved out of my parents house into a shitty apartment in Simi Valley, CA that somehow took my entire paycheck in rent payments each month. $3000 rent for a shower that was shorter than an Oompa Loompa, just to bike to my gig at 11 PM for a 12 hour day.

This job was tantamount to torture. I tend to be a nice person, (or at least try to,) and I like helping people. The people at that manager gig took that and used it against me at every turn, breaking down who I am over the course of 11 months until I couldn’t take it anymore.

By the time I hit college I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and so I ended up with a useless BA in history and got a gig as an area manager at a company which I will not name because I’d like to have some employability left, if any.

My suicidal ideation didn’t really begin as a desire for suicide, rather it began as self-hatred, which grew every time my grades fell below where they were supposed to be. In grade school it was A’s, in high school it was A’s and B’s, in college it was anything above a C.
