Guitarist Sonny Sharrock was no fan of religion: “[I] think Coltrane is God. And so is Miles, and Bird.” Still, I hear his musical space, where “terror and beauty live together in one song,” as profoundly spiritual. Read more: jasonpwoodbury.substack.com/p/sonny-shar...

The city of Tempe, Arizona, says it is ending its Flock program

Tempe, AZ - The City of Tempe has turned off its Flock automated license plate reader (ALPR) system and will end its contract with the company. The cameras are no longer collecting license plate data and will be removed by Flock. The City will not seek another company to replace the system.
While the cameras have been a useful tool for Tempe Police, helping officers solve crimes, recent cases involving the misuse of automated license plate reader systems in Arizona and nationwide have raised concerns about the risks that come with the technology.

Tempe Police has found no misuse of its own Flock system. The department audits its searches each month, and no improper use has been identified.
"These cameras have helped our police officers do their jobs, and we don't discount that," said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods. "But the risk of misuse is too great. We have to be able to provide public safety in a way that maintains the trust of our community. For Tempe, that means taking these cameras down."
"Any law enforcement tool used by the City must not pose a risk of infringing on residents' civil liberties," said Tempe Councilmember Bobby Nichols. "We have a responsibility to ensure that these technolo- gies are only employed if they present a narrowly tailored solution to a compelling government interest. I'm grateful to the City staff for this quick action and responsiveness to constituents' concerns."

Residents may continue to see Flock cameras in Tempe until the company removes its equipment. Data previously collected by the system is stored for 30 days and then automatically deleted unless it is connected to an ongoing case or investigation. In those cases, the data may be retained as needed for the investigation. No new license plate data is being collected now that the system has been turned off.
Ending the use of the Flock system will change how Tempe Police approaches some investigations. Officers will continue to use other investigative tools and law enforcement partnerships to prevent crime, solve cases and respond when the community needs
them.

The decision follows steps Tempe took earlier this month in response to community concerns. On Aug. 10, the City stopped sharing its Flock data with other law enforcement agencies. Tempe Police also launched a public Transparency Portal so residents could see how the system was being used. The portal will be discontinued now that the Flock system has been turned off.
The City of Tempe remains fully committed to both community safety and transparency. Residents can continue to track Tempe's public safety performance through the City's Strategic Management Performance Measures.

Soft Rains Day. "Today is August 4, 2026, in the city of Allendale, California. Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills." RIP Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012

There Will Come Soft Rains
By: Ray Bradbury

In the living room the voice-clock sang, Tick-tock, seven o'clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o 'clock! as if it were afraid that nobody would. The morning house lay empty. The clock ticked on, repeating and repeating its sounds into the emptiness. Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine!
In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunny side up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two
cool glasses of milk.
"Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake.
"Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills."

Today is a great reminder that we can never be too ready.

A chart outlining the RIP BOZO Readiness Condition (RIPCON), which is a riff off of DEFCON. There are 5 levels, with 5 being lowest and 1 being the highest. The chart details descriptions of these levels, examples and actions to take in the event something occurs.
