Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 29/09/2025From the research I did before nearly buying one, the P38 isn’t too bad and most problems are solved by putting a fresh and high CCA battery. L322 is even better because its basically just an X5 wearing the skin of a Range Rover. 010

Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 26/08/2025I suspect they just haven’t figured it out yet, or maybe they have better immobilisers and aren’t worth breaking into - most here are jap imports with pretty much zero security measures 010
Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 25/08/2025Aquas are super common here, so much so that they’re also the most stolen car in NZ That’s mostly down to the incredibly easily broken quarter light window that then enables thieves to very easily unlock them, followed by a joyride. They’re getting tough to insure now. 110
Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 20/08/2025The tapes themselves are actually extremely cheap per gigabyte (fraction of the cost of HDDs) but the drive to read/write them is a huge upfront cost 000
Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 20/08/2025If you can stomach the upfront investment there is no better digital archival medium than LTO tape drives as far as I know 100

Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 30/07/2025As far as I can tell it’s one of those things that media studies people are really into and professionals pretty much never think about 010

Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 13/07/2025Wait a second y’all aren’t using heat pumps for heating as well? Here in NZ it’s like the number one home heating method other than firewood. Our AC units do heating as well. Using the same method they do cooling. Is this not a thing elsewhere? 220

Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 13/06/2025They’re really common here, I’ve been a passenger in at least one (single cab box truck version). Definitely not what I’d call a small vehicle, but then we need special licenses for some US pickups because they’re so big 010

Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 12/06/2025Trade off is that it’s not a true kei vehicle, and the GVM is high enough to require a heavy vehicle license in some places. Or if not, higher road tax. 110

Reposted by Ash MontgomeryJoel Morris @gralefrit.bsky.social · 02/06/2025Time to clarify something. When authors say “Unbound haven’t paid me” that makes it sound like Unbound had some money, which they used to buy authors’ writing. Unbound had no money. The authors did: we had raised that money. They were holding it in trust. Unbound stole our money. 181479499

Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 22/05/2025My infinite money scenario vehicle of choice would be an earlier LR Defender 110. There’s enough room and payload for supplies and internal sleeping, great aftermarket support, and with an Isuzu drivetrain it’d be plenty reliable as well. 210
Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 22/05/2025Even when I lost a coolant line and blew the head gasket on my old motor it drove pretty much exactly the same, it just lost coolant constantly. Ash Montgomery @ontheofftrack.com · 22/05/2025I’m a little biased because I actually own one, but I’d probably go for a 4JH1 or 4JB1 from Isuzu. They’re rock solid diesel engines with very few failure points that can actually kill them. 110
