Lots of talk about how good the writing and acting are on Widow’s Bay, but goddamn the cinematography is impressive too. This scene looked like a cross between NC Wyeth and Phil Hale.

Not for nothing but Widow's Bay -- obviously smartly drawing on many prior horror tropes/shows/films (for good!) -- is an original series & not IP-based. Not All IP obv, but it's very refreshing when a human being has a good idea, then gets to make a TV show based on that good idea! I'm pro this!

Welcome to STC Sunday Morning! This week's Widow's Bay is a legit accomplishment, a flawless pastiche of A24 horror that succeeds as both a spoof and as the thing itself. It's a horror comedy that's actually scary AND funny when most horror shows and comedies on TV can't manage one at a time. Wow.

'Widow's Bay' Episode 4 recap: Party down

This episode is the best pastiche of the A24 house style for horror I’ve ever seen.

Some of those guys in the Salty Whale daring Loftis to stay in the Inn in episode 2 definitely had some New England accents. And one of the guys outside the Inn when Loftis was leading Wyck to the police car. “Leave him alone Loftis, he’s hahmless”.

Widow’s Bay is wild, because there’s almost an anthology like approach employing familiar sub genres of horror in each episode, but in a continuous story. The writing is excellent, as are the performances, all of the art direction, and cinematography. Really great horror storytelling

OK. I recommended Widow’s Bay after just two episodes. S1E4 “Beach Reads” is not only the best episode so far, it’s top shelf creepy of any show. Not just (especially) performance (pictured) but the whole thing. We rewound 10 seconds at a time *bunches* to catch subtle things in background.

I really like WIDOW'S BAY (like everyone else), but something I haven't seen anyone else bring up and that's so refreshing is they didn't fill this small fishing town with models who can't move their faces. It's cast like a 70s movie. It's full of people who actually look like they could live there.

Can't tell you how much I'm enjoying Widow's Bay (on Apple). Like an homage to 80s small town horror classics, and properly funny. Not a send-up. Not a pastiche. Not a rip-off. Just fully aware of The Fog, Jaws, Salem's Lot ... and of Parks and Recreation. Shouldn't work. Does. Recommended.

My review of WIDOW'S BAY is still in proofs for the magazine, so it won't be out for several weeks. However, as the embargo has lifted, I just want to be on record: WIDOW'S BAY is the best new show of the year so far. You should make plans to watch it and fall in love.

Indeed, the most impressive part about Widow's Bay — to my mind, the sole contender for best new show of the year at this point — is how in control it is.

WIDOW’S BAY (Apple TV, I’ve seen most of the eps) is one of the best new TV shows of the year. Hilarious, subversive, and meticulously constructed. It’s like if a show had the plot of a MIDNIGHT MASS crossed with the tone of ATLANTA in all the best ways possible. Premieres April 27.
