No, autism is NOT overdiagnosed. It is *under diagnosed*, especially in autistics who aren't white boys from financially stable families. Anyone who claims we are overdiagnosing autism is either misinformed, or cruel, or both. #autism #neurodiversity

Ok, finished the book. I think my problem with it is that he’s portrayed the social issues quite well, but portrayed the science terribly. And the social concerns and behavioural strategies are actually quite sound. But they’re undermined by the pathologising and denialist/ableist rhetoric.

Onorah @onorah.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
I’m only listening to it because I’m aware other people might read it and come to therapy with beliefs based on the book. But ughhhhhh I hate how he’s framing these things, it’s so harmful, but you can hear how earnestly he’s trying to be what he thinks is “balanced” 😬

Onorah @onorah.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Like, he gives so much air time to some super ableist and harmful beliefs about ADHD, then finally at the end of the chapter has a few sentences on the reality: both genetics and environment are predisposing factors for ADHD, and neither fully explain or “cause” ADHD on its own. So uncomfortable.

Onorah @onorah.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
I’ve been listening to the audiobook of Stolen Focus, and it’s become a hate-listen. It started out as relatively harmless self indulgent interviews with cognitive and behavioural scientists, but by the time he gets around to ADHD it’s a terrifying misunderstanding of basic scientific concepts.

A woodcarver named Becky W (vortenjou.bsky.social, rosehip.wordpress.com) made a sculpture of my nuthatch comic, showing a white-breasted nuthatch sitting on real nuts and hatching one of them. I'm so happy
A wooden carved and painted sculpture of a white-breasted nuthatch sitting on some nuts with a nutmeat with wings flying away into the sky.A four-panel comic. The first panel shows an arrow pointing down at a happy-looking nuthatch bird, and a caption: This is a nuthatch. The caption says "It's called a nuthatch because... wait no" and we see the nuthatch standing on a pile of nuts, tucking them under it. The caption says "That's not... wait" and the nuthatch is roosting comfortably on the pile of nuts. The caption says NO. And we see that one of the nuts has hatched and some walnut meat is flying happily into the air on little wings.

Owls in Towels @owls-in-towels.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
Before and after, 7 days apart. Rescued by a keen-eyed driver, this car-hit Australian Boobook was soon given an assessment, meds and time to rest before release. Want to donate to Mosswood Wildlife? mosswoodwildlife.org.au/donate Source: fb.com/147448698471... #owlsintowels 💛🦉
A Boobook owl is burrito'd in a two-tone towel that's peppery black on the inside and salty white on the out. The tip of a pale grey beak pokes past the fold of the towel, exactly like the OIT logo. The owl's eyes are a brownish yellow-green with a singular tube light reflected in each pupil. One eye is half closed due to swelling from his head injury, but this look could easily be mistaken for glowering... Owls that scowl. With eyes so wide they're practically popping out of their sockets, the same Boobook is once more wrapped in a towel in a clinical setting. This time the cloth is decorated with white stripes and alternating bars of pastel yellow, magenta and cyan, the latter of which is wrapped in a black double helix like it's the Rod of Asclepius. Fitting, given it symbolises health and renewal, and this owl looks both healthy and renewed (and extremely alert).
