And so, the series is popcorn. Something I can consume ravenously in copious amounts during my depression. But there are many passionate readers who insist I should judge it as something with more depth and afford it the grace of tightly constructed satire. When held to that scrutiny, it fails.

And more than that, sweet in a way that things like this don't get to be sweet. I really do appreciate that. It is what kept me in the series despite this central issue of not quite pulling off adept cultural commentary. It's rare, but it's about as rare as the stuff I wrinkle my nose at.

This is all balanced out by the fact that there are more than a few very refreshing moments of genuine emotion I do see as uncommon in this kind of work. I think the scene where Carl tries to part ways with Donut in book 1 for her to apologize and say she cares for him was sweet.

Yes, he has a tragic past from a bad childhood. But that is not significantly more vulnerability and emotional depth than the dead/kiddenapped wife guy we normally see. He is still a badass loner who doesn't talk to people about his feelings very often.
