People who continue to pursue a technology under these circumstances are either massive liars or truly believe this and are persisting anyway, and either way they are rotten people who should be removed from all forms of power and access.

If a chemical is only supposed to dissolve one thing but dissolves everything, we don't say, "OMG, the chemical has gained a higher intelligence and hates everything and now wants to destroy the world! WHAT DO WE DO?" We say, "This company made a dangerous product that needs to be discontinued."

@whysharksmatter.bsky.social I gave my friend a pocket field guide and we started reading a bunch of different types of sharks. Do you know why a bunch of sharks are just named after other creatures? Like dogfish shark, crocodile shark, cow shark, frog shark, zebra bullhead shark, big-eye sandtiger?

STORIES FROM GAZA: ENGINEERING EDUCATION CANNOT BE APOLITICAL By Fady Alalami, Nada Alrayyes, and Robyn Mae Paul. Gaza University, Gaza, Palestine ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/PC...
STORIES FROM GAZA: ENGINEERING EDUCATION CANNOT
BE APOLITICAL
Fady Alalami1
, Nada Alrayyes1 2, and Robyn Mae Paul2
1Gaza University, Gaza, Palestine
2Sustainable Systems Engineering, University of Calgary
rmpaul@ucalgary.ca
Abstract –Living in a war zone for more than two years
heightened our awareness of ethical issues in every
engineering decision. In Gaza, almost all governmental
services were halted, and every individual engineer
became responsible for ensuring essential services like
electricity, water, and medical care. These circumstances
illustrate that ethical decisions cannot be separated from
engineering practice. Neutrality, often emphasized in
sustainability and engineering, can be harmful when
engineers fail to consider the social context and the
impacts of political crises on their work. Engineering
education must reflect this reality.
This paper adopts a qualitative storytelling
methodology with reflexive accounts drawn from engineers
living through the war in Gaza. The approach follows other
similar Palestinian calls for witnessing the war. The
experiences from Gaza show that engineering education
must confront how infrastructure, resource availability,
and environmental harm are shaped by forces far beyond
engineers’ control. These stories also demonstrate that
when political conditions shift suddenly—as they do in
war, displacement, or environmental collapse— engineers
must be capable of adjusting their methods and developing
safe, responsible solutions that sustain human life and
minimize harm. Overall, these findings underscore the
need for engineers to be educated with strong ethical and
social awareness.

Relatedly, any organization that claims to be taking a "human-centered" approach, but is only asking "How do we use [whatever tech] responsibly?" and not "Should we use [tech] at all" is in fact centering the tech, and not the people. >>

Yup. I think this fits their trajectory, indeed. Part of a wider attempt at claiming that we should just find ways to use these "tools" through some pragmatic acceptance. See: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... bsky.app/profile/oliv...
Second, the accommodation reflex and its institutional
form: The accommodation reflex errs differently and
more consequentially (see Table 1). Its institutional
articulation is literacy-laundering, the repackaging of
corporate product adoption as educational empowerment.
When technology companies offer teachers and students
‘AI training’ or promote ‘AI literacy,’ they are engaged in
brand marketing, framed as a progressive, philanthropically
fundable intervention. The literacy label locates the problem
in users’ understanding rather than in systems’ design, and
in doing so, displaces accountability from the companies that
built and profit from these systems toward the educators and
students who are expected to become fluent in them, and
forecloses the prior question of whether fluency is the goal
at all. The accommodation reflex, in its institutional form,
makes un-training structurally unthinkable by presupposing
integration as inevitable; a critical account of AI literacy,
by contrast, is not primarily about how to use systems
but whether, when, and under what conditions their use is
warranted at all (viz. Guest, Suarez, & van Rooij, 2025; Sano-
Franchini, 2025).

Here's the serious bit for anyone who'd rather skip the 4000 words of jokes
Because the truth is, tech doesn't have an image problem. It doesn't have a message problem. It has an intention problem. What's wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasn't successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. What's wrong is that he's trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product that's designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isn't that you haven't told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them. (
There are things in the world that are more important than money. The fact that you seem not to believe this, that you seem to think any motive beyond ruthless acquisitiveness is fake, dishonest, or childish, is the heart of your problem. Your attitude is not by any means unique to tech, but the

personally I think it's a very big deal that the Canada bureau chief for the @nytimes.com — certainly one of the highest-paid journalists in the country — asked an unspecified "AI tool" what Poilievre said & published its AI-hallucinated quotes in her reporting.
Editors’ Note: May 1, 2026
This article was updated after The Times learned that a remark attributed to Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader, was in fact an A.I.-generated summary of his views about Canadian politics that A.I. rendered as a quotation. The reporter should have checked the accuracy of what the A.I. tool returned. The article now accurately quotes from a speech delivered by Mr. Poilievre in April. He said, “My personal opinion is that when a member of Parliament goes back on the word they made to their constituents and switches parties, constituents should be able to petition to throw them out and have a byelection. That would put the people back in charge of our democracy rather than having dirty backroom Liberal deals by Mark Carney determine our destiny.” He did not refer to politicians who changed allegiances as turncoats in that speech.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.
