Definitely felt this in Milton, but the sense of agency games give you makes it hit even harder. I still remember that first colossus. "Woo, kick-ass! The bigger they are, etc. I am mighty!...Wait, why did I do this? *Should* I have done it? Was that...a person?" Games-as-art, baby.

Love all these posts about "late-stage capitalism" that have nothing really to do with capitalism, they just boil down to "it sucks that I have to work at all." Having to expend effort to acquire food or shelter or whatever is not specific to any particular economic system!

One of the weirdest parts of getting old is watching *successive* generations of people you thought of as kids age. Millennials used to be kids to me, and now they're all well into middle age. Barely got used to that and now I hear homeowning Zoomers with kids bitch about their joints hurting.

You know how the overly online like to be mad at fictional people on the Internet? Well, thank you, @mcsweeneys.net, for this non-existent (except in the aggregate) dead-eyed asshole that I so desperately want to punch.

Problem: it's too easy to impersonate an email domain. Solution: public DNS-based verification (SPF, DMARC, DKIM) Result: Your users get mad that they didn't get an email from a guy who configured his domain wrong, ask you to unblock it. Problem: it's too easy to impersonate an email domain.

The fundamental divide in the AI wars is that spreadsheet people do the work that allows slideshow people to do their work, and slideshow people think computer can just replace spreadsheet people with bullshit. Be proud of being a spreadsheet person.

Royce White has no intention of following through on any of this nonsense & even less chance of getting anywhere with it. The entire point is to get people to give him free promotion. Fox, obviously, was always going to give it to him, but big ups to all the posters on Bsky doing their best to help.

Prestige TV. Access to the music you want to listen to. Vehicle safety (for the occupants, at least). The unacceptability of homophobia in decent company. Most of medicine. Narrative in video games. Relative wealth in much of the world, esp. US. Number of Chinese and Indians in poverty. & yes, food.

The GURPS roleplaying game had an elegant system where, adjusted for inherent difficulty, going from "clueless" to "very slightly competent" in a skill was quite easy, with further skill level-ups increasingly harder. It's a great model for how it works IRL, and collecting skills is underrated.

The hardest artistic thing to get your head around is works about history old enough to feel like they’re from that period, so that you can’t sort out what is contemporary to the author and what’s their own bad history, like Homer, or the medieval accounts of King Arthur’s court, or Happy Days

90% of RW "hypocrisy" is simply their opponents naively taking them at their word that their goals and motives are actually what they say they are. The other 10% is not understanding what in their twisted understanding of the world makes the contradictions seem perfectly consistent.

One can support the use of speed cameras (good evidence they improve safety + raising revenue from scofflaws) while still acknowledging equality and civil liberties issues. Oh, you promise they won't mostly go in black neighborhoods? The vendor pinkie-swears it won't ever give plate data to LE? OK.

Where are people getting the idea that Politico reviewed the therapist notes? They make no such claim in their article, and are explicit that the therapist didn't comment. Racicot makes a credible and quite well documented accusation. There's no need to "improve" it with headcanon.

Cape Verdeans are now honorary Philadelphians because that was basically ROCKY. They weren't "supposed" to be there, much less going the distance with the champions and the GOAT, who had to give it everything they've got just to eek out a win in overtime. Bravo.

Question for linguistics, voice, or acting Bsky: Today I saw actress Madison Hu in ATLA. I heard what I'd call a "thickness" in her speech and instantly wondered if she was from Texas, and Wikipedia says she's from there. She's not speaking with an accent, so what was it I heard?

My 3 favorite bits of headcanon: * the Toreador clan turned Freddie Mercury before he died & he's still around * Jean Grey died on the moon and none of the Jeans since then were real * in the Mad Max universe, things are like that only in Australia. The rest of the world is normal and fine.

I think my 2 issues with are AI are not that it is not useful, but that A.) C-Suite goofballs think it is much more useful than it is, and B.) I know it's heavily subsidized and "clean up my query" is great now but will it still be great when it costs $200 / month?

More likely he was responding to what James Talarico said, but it's even funnier to consider that he heard "the libs" say there is an 'infinite spectrum of genders' and decided that was just too hard to say, so he went with six instead.

Dunno if something changed in what Bsky shows me or if there's something different in the water lately, but recently the whole "we shouldn't let the awfullest people win elections just to show off how uncompromising we are when their opponent is not-great" strategy is becoming acceptable here

What I like best about the Artemis II photos is that it was taken by actual humans. An actual person had to frame it and manually adjust settings. It's their own artistic rendition of what they thought looked best at the time, something no probe, rover or unmanned spacecraft can take. it's art

Ages ago I saw Penn & Teller at a theater on Walnut Street. Penn did a fire eating act & explained how it was done. Being 12 I of course immediately went home & did it myself. 40 years later had the pleasure of seeing another carny-adjacent former fire eater, @carisahendrix.bsky.social on Walnut!

leftist walking into the car dealership: "So this one gets shitty mileage, but this other one gets shitty mileage, won't start in the rain, *and* the manufacturer guarantees it will burst into flame with me inside it? I don't see why you're even asking me to choose, there's literally no difference."

I've often thought the reflexive "it's about the oil!" from the left was a bit simplistic and reductive, so it's very refreshing to have a warmonger who's quite open about it being about the oil. Though it's still not just about the oil.

Imagining a language proficiency scale based on which of these sentences is most useful to you when traveling: "Sorry, I don't speak <language>." "Please say that again, more slowly." "Please keep speaking <your language>, I want to practice." "Talk normal, buddy, I'm not six."

I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

The most interesting thing about DJT's rant about Rob Reiner is how nakedly he expresses his core weakness. His whole life he's been desperate to be liked and acknowledged by famous people, esp. those who are actually successful, and RR's unforgivable sin is just... not liking him.

AI has truly revolutionized business communication. Where once you'd write a sentence or two asking for what you needed, now you can get AI to turn it into 3-page memo. Then the recipient will get AI to summarize it for them into a sentence or two that vaguely resembles your original request.

Parade is on so I'm hearing a lot more pop country than I ever would otherwise & am convinced they try super hard to sing with a broad accent because normally singing flattens that sort of thing. "Ahm a gell who lahks hosses" and such.
