Okaloose County expects to sink the SS United States the second week in November, depending on weather.

So happy to see there's still (un)life in the WoD! Can't wait to look through the rest of it. I was a WW editor back in the day, and this reminds me of all the great stuff coming through from pro submissions and regular people on BBSs and such.

idk man, that requires the people in the current administration knowing something about history beyond what they saw in the movie "300".

On yeah, totally. "Some guy at a bar did the Simpsons spicy-meatball voice at me one time, I definitely understand racism."

Action movies feel like they're art-directed by the same people who make every FPS a study in how many gradations of muddy brown the young male human eye can distinguish.

Unfortunately some of our fellow goombas do remember this, and use it to minimize the immigrant/PoC experience. "We weren't even considered white!, 'turned inside out', etc." yeah well, we are *now*. I really doubt I ever didn't get a job because of that vowel at the end of my name.

Definitely felt this in Milton, but the sense of agency games give you makes it hit even harder. I still remember that first colossus. "Woo, kick-ass! The bigger they are, etc. I am mighty!...Wait, why did I do this? *Should* I have done it? Was that...a person?" Games-as-art, baby.

The thing is, there really are a lot of problems with capitalism! But they're only addressable - they're only even *interesting* - if they're specific to it. "Why can't I live in a mansion for free" isn't one of them - it's a limitation of existing in a material world (a thing Marx understood!).

Like, if you woke up tomorrow isekai-style in Great Soviet Socialist Utopia, do you think the crops just grow and harvest themselves and hop over to your fridge, which assembled itself from first principles out of the dust bunnies in the kitchen of a house that sprouted from the earth?

Love all these posts about "late-stage capitalism" that have nothing really to do with capitalism, they just boil down to "it sucks that I have to work at all." Having to expend effort to acquire food or shelter or whatever is not specific to any particular economic system!

It's amazing how that comes through in the article, and the condescension and savior-mentality of it all. "What 'these people' need is somebody affluent and educated... we'll move the needle, since they clearly cannot." Maybe some people already there are trying too, and things are just hard!

There *is* superhero fatigue. But much of what drives it is audiences bored with low-quality material that feels churned out - not specifically, or at least entirely, the genres as such. Decent movies still generate buzz and make money! It's just that "see the latest Marvel!" won't cut it anymore.

One of the weirdest parts of getting old is watching *successive* generations of people you thought of as kids age. Millennials used to be kids to me, and now they're all well into middle age. Barely got used to that and now I hear homeowning Zoomers with kids bitch about their joints hurting.

My former coworkers at the Georgia auto shop where my transplant self eventually started saying "y'all" didn't mind it one bit. Though my boss did predict (accurately) that the first Southernism I'd pick up would be "big ol'".

Oh, yeah, I get it - I'm the one who's 'mad on the Internet'. The composite that the character represents would make my blood boil (and I'm married to a librarian, a type that definitely understands the difference between "human knowledge"and "books-as-objects", but still...) Great piece!

You know how the overly online like to be mad at fictional people on the Internet? Well, thank you, @mcsweeneys.net, for this non-existent (except in the aggregate) dead-eyed asshole that I so desperately want to punch.

... you wouldn't want it. For the hell of it, I opened another browser and asked it about that restaurant by name and it said "There's no restaurant by that name at [made-up address that I never even mentioned]. When I pointed that out Gemini was like "sorry, I just assumed you'd want that address."

Gemini hallucination is *intense*, and occurs when it's hard to imagine it's necessary. I asked it to tell me about [ethnicity] restaurant in [town] and it said there's wasn't one, so I typed "what about [exact restaurant] and it was like oh yeah, sorry, they didn't have a good webpage so I thought/

Your marketing VP does not want to hear that the guy they're spending $$$ on because he's an "email marketing expert" told your mail server to reject any emails that don't come from specific IPs, then went and sent emails from somewhere else because he forgot he was using a mass-mailing service.

Problem: it's too easy to impersonate an email domain. Solution: public DNS-based verification (SPF, DMARC, DKIM) Result: Your users get mad that they didn't get an email from a guy who configured his domain wrong, ask you to unblock it. Problem: it's too easy to impersonate an email domain.

The fundamental divide in the AI wars is that spreadsheet people do the work that allows slideshow people to do their work, and slideshow people think computer can just replace spreadsheet people with bullshit. Be proud of being a spreadsheet person.

There are a lot of use cases where AI is being used in part bc the compute is heavily subsidized. Supercomputers have crunched for novel drug formulas for decades, but supercomputer time is expensive. Right now you get to use somebody else's compute at such a deep discount you'd be crazy not to.

Remember a couple years ago, either here or the Other Place, where somebody posted Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time" video and everybody was confused what the song was about? It's about a girl, and she likes to party! *All* the time! Why is that hard to believe?

Wisconsin gave its electoral votes to an "election-denying, pro-ICE, authoritarian extremist" for president in 2024, so the answer to "Could Wisconsin voters possibly accept a right-wing nutjob?" is already known. Hong, at least, is an interesting alternative whose performance may be illustrative.

There's a couple places where he talks about how he thinks it ought to work, suggesting a valid goal but a poor implementation. I admit I may be misremembering where some of the "historical redress" stuff appears (he def goes over that in the Boston Globe piece that he links to in the article.)

He makes good points abt academic resistance to unions & the possibility that "woke" stuff is a cost-saving distraction. But the worst thing a black professional can do is fail to reassuringly pat the heads of colleagues who are desperate to show that they're the Right Kind of White People.

A lot of Bsky wants to caricature this as "it's because of woke", but TAH actually agrees with DEI goals and redress of historical underrepresentation. They really hate how he calls out administrations for performances of progressiveness while keeping their other boot on the necks of young faculty.

Royce White has no intention of following through on any of this nonsense & even less chance of getting anywhere with it. The entire point is to get people to give him free promotion. Fox, obviously, was always going to give it to him, but big ups to all the posters on Bsky doing their best to help.

Prestige TV. Access to the music you want to listen to. Vehicle safety (for the occupants, at least). The unacceptability of homophobia in decent company. Most of medicine. Narrative in video games. Relative wealth in much of the world, esp. US. Number of Chinese and Indians in poverty. & yes, food.

Like, I've invested less than a dozen hours in lockpicking and knife-throwing, which makes me far better at them than 99% of the population. At that level they're useful for nothing but fun and perhaps party tricks, which is... fun. And good for party tricks.

The GURPS roleplaying game had an elegant system where, adjusted for inherent difficulty, going from "clueless" to "very slightly competent" in a skill was quite easy, with further skill level-ups increasingly harder. It's a great model for how it works IRL, and collecting skills is underrated.

Census records for my modest house c. 1920 show one of the (unnamed!) residents was an "Irish servant". The one ten years later had a "Negro servant", also unnamed. Ten years later, no more servants. Like a capsule history of domestic service (and racism, and economics, and...).

When you love the stuff, you find different kinds fulfill different roles. I love pricey Belgian ales with expansive, nutty noses, but I also like a good cold lawnmower beer. You don't necessarily love bad things, but you find something to love in many things that snobs dismiss.

The hardest artistic thing to get your head around is works about history old enough to feel like they’re from that period, so that you can’t sort out what is contemporary to the author and what’s their own bad history, like Homer, or the medieval accounts of King Arthur’s court, or Happy Days
