Let me make this easy. No nation-state, including my own natal land, has the right to exist based on religious or racial requirements for belonging, by dispossessing or excluding others, or having different classes of citizenship.

I still don't understand how they can say the march would go ahead peacefully and then when it is permitted, immediately ask for 200 or whatever extra police from Scotland

Boutcher made an absolute balloon of himself deciding to launch his “large scale criminal investigation” - the chances of the march being banned were high enough that using a huge amount of public resources to stop a peaceful rally by residents was a complete failure. And he’s the one who referred!

an utter farce from start to finish, and we had to put up with a commentariat telling us that we're so sectarian because we don't like a sectarian organisation, and we don't deserve a United Ireland.

going to be a pretty bizarre situation if anyone is prosecuted for protesting against a march that the PSNI belatedly decided to make Chris Bryant cancel. Which is to say nothing about the fact that the PSNI have spent public money well upwards of £3m for a march that never should have been allowed

The Secretary of State, under his power granted by the 1998 Public Processions Act, has banned the Orange Order from walking the Garvaghy road. That, Gavin Robinson, is the rule of law.

With the notable and singular exception of Gavin Bazunu, the FAI made us all complicit in this, and we just forgot about it and ignored it.

Fintan O'Toole in the Irish Times today once again banging the drum for infantilising communities in the North and ascribing political conflict to atavism and an almost congenital backwardness. Of course, this view is shared by so many of his readers...

Today's Fintan O'Toole article should permanently disqualify him from commenting on anything to do with the six counties, yet alone a united Ireland. Unrestrained cliché and non-analytical nonsense filtered through the absurdly outdated 'MOPE' lens of Liam Kennedy

Of course this doesn't mean that they are the same, or that all Orangemen saw or see themselves this way. But the self-made comparisons clearly suggest that in the epoch of partition it was and is an instrument of domination for the state and loyalists

Or, for example, this comparison of the logic for its foundation with the Ku Klux Klan, a decade earlier. 'An Orangeman', "The Origins of the Orange Order", Ulster Review 1.2 (July 1924)

Stephen O'Neill @oneillsb.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
People are far happier to understand Orangeism through both sidesism rather than understanding how it has been constructed by its greatest proponents. James Craig in 1934 explicitly linked the police, the orange order, the state, and fascism

Stephen O'Neill @oneillsb.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The way some people are talking about the Orange Order, they must think 'The Orange State' refers to some kind of fruit-driven agricultural policy pursued by the six county state from 1921-1973

There should be a large scale investigation into why the PSNI advised the parades commission that there would be no trouble at the parade and then drafted 200 additional cops from Scotland for the weekend

The public inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane is being prevented from access to millions of intelligence documents. Government funding for a secure computer system has yet to be agreed, more than two years after the investigation was first announced.

Finucane inquiry blocked from secret files over funding delay
The inquiry is still waiting for secure infrastructure to handle sensitive intelligence documents

The worst thing about living in a neo/colony is that people take the whims of a visiting power figure like this seriously, as if he isn't just saying the equivalent of Go Birds when visiting Philadelphia

This is framing a United ireland as an impossibility, seemingly in order to stick it to Trump and making it seem like the US colonising Greenland. It is also pretty obtuse about the origins of partition. The phrase 'Even Micheál Martin' is used as if he is some kind of arch anti-partitionist

For people of my age (old) and my background (CNR) who grew up in NI during the 90s, Drumcree was the nadir of community relation & differences in our perceptions of ‘rights’. We just could not conceive how a group of snarling, angry men thought their ‘right to march’ surpassed our ‘right to exist’.
