One of the most harrowing things about academia, when you're a grad student, is how vulnerable you are to how you're perceived by more senior researchers. Your career advancement depends on confidential letters of reference & private discussions amongst faculty. You have no information or control.

We are approaching a pandemic-level of travel avoidance. As we noted before, once people's vacation travel patterns change, they discover new places to fall in love with; they rarely return to their old ones.

🌊 Why are tides tiny in some places but 10m+ in others? It’s not just the Moon. Ocean-basin shape, coastlines, seafloor ridges and resonance all amplify or damp tides. And climate change is changing the tides too. theconversation.com/earths-tides...

Earth’s tides are shaped by more than the Moon. And they’re changing as the planet warms
For coastal communities, understanding how tides are changing is increasingly important.

Japan 2026: Welcome to Nikko!
Nikko. This is why Anthony, Matt, & I traveled to Japan. A solid 2+ drive from Tokyo, this is where we’d be staying, and fishing, for the next four days. Our friend Hiro picked us up at our Tokyo hotel early Monday morning in his Toyota van. The plan was to drive up into Nikko, do some sightseeing in the morning, meet up with Hiro’s Nikko Tenkara partner Takashi Sakauchi in the afternoon, check into our hotel, and then have a “welcome” dinner that night ahead of our first day of fishing on Tuesday.

Let's talk about the bristlemouths, 13 species of bioluminescent deep-dwelling ocean fish in genus Cyclothone. There are a lot of them. Like, a lot. Specifically, our best guess is there are a million billion (1E15) bristlemouths on Earth. Making them the most populous vertebrate on the planet.
A xenomorph looking fish with dark slightly sparkly skin and an oversized lower jaw packed with sharp, needle-like teeth.
