Two irreplacable Art Deco sculptures were smashed by jackhammers last month under orders from a New York City developer who had promised them to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The 15-foot-high stone bas-relief sculprures, which depicted semi-nude goddesses, were part of the Bonwit-Teller building (Warren and Wetmore,
1929) on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue at S6th Street. Developer Donald Trump bought the structure recently and was demolishing it to build a 62-story. $100
million mixed-use glass tower.
In addition, a 15-by-25 foot nickel. plated grille that had adorned the build. ing's facade has been missing since it was supposed to have been shipped to a New Jersey warehouse. Neither the Trump Organization nor the warehouse has any idea of the whereabouts of the hefty....

To build his skyscraper, Trump first had to knock down the Bonwit Teller building, a luxurious limestone building erected in 1929.
The face of the building featured two huge
Art Deco friezes that the Metropolitan Museum of Art wanted to preserve. The museum asked Trump to save the sculptures and donate them, and the mogul agreed-as long as the cost of doing so wasn't too high.
But then, according to journalist Harry Hurt Ill in his book Lost Tycoon, Trump discovered that taking out the sculptures would delay demolition by two weeks. He wasn't willing to wait. "On his orders, the demolition workers cut up the grillwork with acetylene torches," Hurt wrote. "Then they jackhammered the friezes, dislodged them with crowbars, and pushed the remains inside the building, where they fell to the floor and shattered in a million pieces."

In 1980, under pressure to begin construction on what would become his signature project, Donald Trump employed a crew of 200 undocumented Polish workers who worked in 12-hour shifts, without gloves, hard hats or masks, to demolish the Bonwit Teller building on New York's Fifth Avenue, where the 58-story, golden-hued Trump Tower now stands.
The workers were paid as little as $4 (£3) an hour for their dangerous labour, less than half the union wage, if they got paid at all.

Strolling around our garden area I found a few lingering blossoms. Things are fading now, but there are still bright spots.

I don’t know what this is, but it’s spectacular! Flower with bright red petals and a large brilliant yellow center. Surrounded by deep green leaves.

It’s been another super dahlia season out there, but they seem to be fading. This extra large varietyis stunning every year. Bright orange-re petals that are tipped and rimmed with gold.

These marigolds grew like crazy in my own garden box. They covered not only a couple of corners, but almost one solid side of the box. Grown from seed saved from last year.
