Stop building client-side forms
Forms are deceptively hard. Client-side forms are 10x harder.

I’m on the market for a foldable bike for my commute. Potentially electric. Any recommendations? Brompton seems like the obvious choice but curious about alternatives.

I like to make a distinction between writing code and typing code. Write the code in your mind, then get AI to *type* (not write) it for you.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

I really don't know why, but when I land on a web site that has a little bit of unintentional horizontal play, it distresses me, and instead of reading the article or page, I end up searching for why the page has overshot the width of my page. Such a terrible habit. Stupid developer brain.

❤️ Parenting is bloody hard work (especially balancing it with all the other demands of the modern world) and I think only other parents can truly appreciate that. I often wish more of my friends and colleagues were parents so I wasn't so alone in this.

Am I the only one who thinks, actually the alert system should be used for something more useful than "you're about to die lol"? Sure it's common sense that the country is dry and fire is bad, but people are still using BBQs and camping stoves and smoking cigarettes so it's clearly not so common. 🤷🏻‍♂️

jj absorb now lets you interactively choose which hunks from the source to consider for absorption. This is useful when you only want to absorb part of a commit without first splitting it. Any hunks that are not selected or cannot be absorbed remain in the source commit.

I'm so burnt out from AI era velocity, slop posts, bots and the attention economy, that I've recently got a balance phone. It's black & white, doesn't allow social, and has reduced motion on by default. It's wonderful. But actively avoiding being online does leave me feeling weird about my job.

@acemarke.dev Crazy idea but I wonder if it would make sense to have a compiler for selectors that automatically memoizes, like how React Compiler. So you don't have to manually optimize e.g. with `createSelector`. Is this something you've thought about before?

Oliver Ash @oliverjash.me · 15/07/2026
@en-js.bsky.social 👋 If you were building an SPA today in React (e.g. a dashboard), how would you do state management? Imagining that much of the state needs to be shared by many components. Context + React Compiler? 1 or many useSyncExternalStores? State library? Etc.
110
Oliver Ash @oliverjash.me · 14/07/2026
Now I'm curious how many context providers you have. 😁
110
Oliver Ash @oliverjash.me · 14/07/2026
A more specific use case we have is: we need to filter an array from React Query using client-side state, then share that filtered array with many components.
110
Oliver Ash @oliverjash.me · 14/07/2026
Is that as a separate context from the state or the same context? Curious what that would look like in the derived filtered array example I gave.
100
Oliver Ash @oliverjash.me · 14/07/2026
What do you do for shared values derived from state? E.g. array as state, then a derived filtered version of that array is used in many components. In Redux the idiomatic solution to this is selector memoization. Perhaps you could have another context for the shared derived value? cc @samhh.com
