As a European (I thought this was international, but apparently not) who studied graphic design, I have an answer. The reason (especially in non-manga books) is that if you leave the book on a table with the cover facing up, the title on the spine will be legible instead of being upside down.

my patented technique for how to never draw your belts backwards again: ED

A three step instructional for drawing belt buckles.
Step 1: Strap (Draw two parallel lines)
Step 2: ED (write "ED" on top of your parallel lines)
Step 3: Belt (The buckle and tail of the belt are now placed correctly in relation to each-other, you may complete your belt drawing)
