Elder Br in Tokyo. Plays too much videogames. I don't really like this site, but here to follow people I used to follow on Twitter. Not really posting anything, just reposting things I like, and replying when I can't help it.

Eu fiquei surpreso com a velocidade das filas. Chegei em Ariake as 10:20, 10:40 ja tinha votado. Bem diferente de 2018, aquele ano foram quase 4 horas de fila...

Dilma Rousseff is a left-wing icon who fought the dictatorship in the 70s, was arrested & tortured, then became our 1st female president and reached 79% approval rate, being re-elected before the 2016 right-wing coup. All Americans saw were false corruption charges. You're not immune to propaganda

Major Chinese tech companies recently shut down their popular AI companion services to comply with new regulations that ban the platforms from manipulating emotions or replacing social interactions. Some users are upset, uninstalling apps in protest or trying to train new ones.

Scroll of Taiwu is a great example of this... One of the most important "indie" games of the last decade, it changed what Steam meant as a market and created an entire new genre, selling 3.4M copies and spawning countless successors. Anglosphere media had nothing to say about it, zero curiosity.

Ozone Layer, exhaust controls in cars, asbestos, sometimes we manage to grab some wins in the regulation space. I don't think it is good strategy to get blackpilled on the climate costs front.

Meh, US corpos controlling the narrative is old news, Bezos is just the current face of it. This is a song that has been playing for a looooooong time. But I think it is still worth tilting at this particular windmill. Sometimes we wrestle little victories, specially when it gets undeniably bad.

My objection was that I thought you were saying "the climate complaints are a trap, AI corps will get around that problem eventually", which I find really hard to believe. But if you're saying "AI corps will control the narrative around climate complains", then I guess I agree, "well duh" (...)

But that's whats happening right now, no? The papers around me, none of them are talking about the eco problems. You mentioned the post, but that's like a tiny little leaf in the wind, no government are consideriny serious eco-related regulations. But then the discussion we're having changes(...)

"Corporations have the power to reduce their externalities, therefore they will do it at some point, just because they can" just sounds kinda ahistorical. Unless by "practical" you mean it would give them concrete, short term benefits, but then you'd have to explain that one more, sounds unlikely.

Old Man Syms @oldmansyms.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
Greenwashing is a thing, sure. But greenwashing, and making it actually green are very different things. I don't quite buy the "practical" argument, though -- last time I've seen something like that was back in the "Ozone Layer Hole" days, and that was industry being dragged by regulations.

Old Man Syms @oldmansyms.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
Brian, this is a weird take, even assuming you're correct on everything else. Capital holders (billionaires and related corps) have been able to do "green" things for decades now, in different stages, and yet haven't unless dragged by govs. Why would it be different now? (specially with weaker govs)

Also, copy pasting code from a forum and package programming may suck, but it does not consume as much energy/water as a small country to create a quick and dirty prototype.

I'm enjoying seeing people post their favorite physical games - I'm honestly jealous. Back then, those did not exist in Brazil unless you were VERY wealthy. We just had CD cases full of pirate discs. Super cheap, but no box, no manual... some were just regular CD-Rs... I have no attachment to them.
