If legislation gave unions more robust powers and workers more robust protections, we probably wouldn't have ended up here, but our ruling political parties one again cannot fathom the unintended consequences of the system they very purposefully built

I just think it's kind of tiresome how, in a country with incredibly weak unions and industrial relations legislation, the government are trying to act wounded and outraged that unions are doing literally the only thing they can do to exercise leverage

I'm away from home and just learned thst someone has been killed while cycling outside of the town. People say the local roads are lethal. What they should say is ghe way *people* drive on the local roads is lethal. One more crisis FFG have convinced people can't be fixed so we shouldn't try.

I'm still shaken from seeing a woman in a some sort of defence forces vehicle, in uniform, at 120kmh, on her phone. I'm not talking quick glances between a phone and the road. The phone was practically at a right angle to the windscreen and had her full attention. Lethal.

I do think the mechanism of being elected Taoiseach is important here. Any TD that gets more then 87 votes in the vote for Taoiseach. Gets to be taoiseach. All those votes are from TDs voted in by their constituency.

I saw a video of his remarks in which Micheál Martin stated he was directly elected by the people, with the implication this gives him greater legitimacy than unions. he was, of course, only directly elected as a TD for Cork South-Central, which means he represents fewer people than SIPTU

many such cases in Ireland. I am 100% sure Dan O'Brien would back a coup to topple a left government in this country. there is no question in my mind. he'd be straight in with a column on how sometimes you have to save democracy from itself. but it is most acute in FFG, for obvious reasons

Micheál Martin does not actually believe in democracy, he believes in the periodic ratification of elite consensus at the ballot box, and he treats any attempt to oppose, resist or even question elite consensus as an attack on "democracy"

Does anyone do a quality audit into why decisions are wrong in the Dept. If I was running the dept - I'd want to improve the accuracy of decision making. In those 5300 cases one of the decisions will be wrong - either the initial decision or the appeal.

My issue is how many cases that should be approved - are getting refused. Because of 1) the initial decisions been rushed to "improve processing time". And the big one 2) the system having a bias towards reducing the approval rate.

Yes, I've seen some of the abuse on this site for the stance I've taken. But it won't change my belief that this motion is gesture politics of the kind you might find in a students' union. Except in this case it has real and damaging consequences - that are already playing out. A massive self-own.

For the sake of a slogan achieving nothing except great concern and distress to British Jews, Green members have probably destroyed any hope that a party - their party - which consistently and clearly opposes the #genocide will join the next government. We keep being told that things like rent can't be capped. But we cap wages no bother at all. Splendid. So the capped wage has to keep up with the uncapped (in long term) rent.

This is concerning as it implies a process aimed at tying to reduce the number of successful citizenship applications. Let's see if Jim O Callaghan will be up to similar clusterfuckery when he implements language exams for citizenship applicants in Ireland.

I spent a couple of years managing a concession store in Anthony Ryan's in my early 20s. It was a proper old-school, old-fashioned retail experience, the kind that has mostly faded out of existence. Anthony was incredibly kind and decent to deal with, and I'll always remember my time there fondly.

Breed specific legislation is bullshit. But even under a good faith interpretation, the legislation is designed specifically to protect the general public from your dog in *public* spaces. It has no application in a private home. There is no basis for banning these breeds other than prejudice.

You are incorrect in one respect: the phrase “legitimate concerns” has frequently been used when referring to transphobic claims for years. I think it even predates its use with regard to migrants. And it has lead to the biggest assault on trans rights since the 1930s.

So the favourite obsession of the far right, being weaponised by US billionaires to push us towards their technofascist dystopia, is repeatedly legitimised by a Labour government. Other concerns, including the longstanding concerns of the left, are vilified and delegitimised.

It doesn’t stop there. Compare the way ministers treat local people’s views about providing accommodation for asylum seekers with their treatment of other planning objections. In these cases we don’t have legitimate concerns. We’re “nimbys”, “blockers” and “zealots”.

In these cases, they clearly believe our concerns are illegitimate. So illegitimate that they often associate us with – or even proscribe us as – terrorists. Care about Palestinians? Terrorist. Want to burn and kill asylum seekers? We might not like your methods, but you have legitimate concerns.
