Your monthly reminder: Keep writing. When no one cares, persist. When things appear to be crumbling, keep at it. When it's difficult, push through. When you feel alone, listen to the stories in your blood. Just write. The world needs your stories.

H. P. Lovecraft predicted AI?
Screenshot of a Reddit discussion which compares shoggoths, those creatures designed originally by H. P. Lovecraft, to modern AI. It reads:

I think Shoggoth/AI is a great analogy.

The Shoggoths were created to be tools and/or slaves, and to do the work the Old Ones didn't want to do.

Like AI, the Shoggoths were mimics, even producing terrible artwork in the vein of greater, more original minds.

Also, dependency on the Shoggoths contributed to the Old Ones' demise.

Anyway, I think HPL would be horrified to find out that AI is being used to create "art" and "literature".

I have DNFed so many projects, especially in crafting that sometimes I wonder if my attention span just doesn't cut it for long projects. But now with the latest writing project I have realized that maybe it's not the attention span to blame but fear of failure.

Axios writer: I melted my brain with AI. Not only can I no longer read, but I don't even understand the purpose of reading anymore. Here's how you can also do this. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...
Axios: AI has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes, and make sense of wordy, old prose.

Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books — a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane — makes it easy to lose the thread. AI can help you pick it back up without starting over.
📖 I really got into using AI while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:

"I'd like a guide as I read The Last of the Mohicans who can help me understand what I've read and where the story is, without giving spoilers or getting ahead of my progress. Can you do this, chapter by chapter?"
The robot agreed: "Cooper's sentences are long and his diction is archaic."

My first fiction piece has 500 more words and I'm so proud of myself! Totaling 2000 words. Aiming for 5000 to 6000-word apocalyptic cosmic horror tale. I know it's still raw, will probably never publish, but it feels already a genuine accomplishment (I always thought I can't write fiction!) #noAI

THE RISE has been out 6 months, so starting to slide out of awareness. Max might look like he doesn't care, but he thinks it's really important you read this book. If you *have* read it, Max would love it if you left a review somewhere or recommended it to your pals, as it means he gets more food.

I've been writing fiction (instead of scientific text) lately and, damn, the stories take me into dark places. Clearly a lot of buried, unresolved childhood issues, that want to be unearthed. Not sure if I'm ready for this... But otherwise writing fiction feels great!

It's conference season, so I wanted to share the AI refusal statement I put at the end of my presentations and book talks. Feel free to use it!
AI Refusal Statement
I did not use generative AI at any point in the production of this book or presentation, including the literature review, writing, editing, translation, organization, or any other task (e.g. brainstorming). To the extent that it is possible to know, I did not cite any studies that used generative AI.
Justification: GenAI technology is based on stolen labor, anti-solidarity between workers, class exploitation, structural racism, misogyny, environmental injustice, and climate destabilization.
