Hey, guess who's got two thumbs and is opening to submissions on Aug 24? It's THIS MAG. Actually, I guess the magazine doesn't have any thumbs, but I—JJA—do, and I'm eager to get them all over dem horror stories after 6 years out of the editorial chair. I guess it will mostly be my other fingers.

I wrote an essay for America’s 250th birthday, but not really the fireworks-and-bunting kind. It’s about exhaustion, complaint, patriotism, and why a country this unfinished can still be worth arguing for. open.substack.com/pub/labee/p/...

At 250, America is exhausted, divided and unfinished, which may be exactly why it still matters.

My official review of Pressure is live. A rare D-Day film that finds the tension before the beaches, in the weather reports, command rooms and impossible calls that shaped history. Read it here: 👇 open.substack.com/pub/labee/p/...

when i think about artists ruining their own name and falling for ai i am reminded of one of my favorite lyrics. it is from the bright eyes song 'road to joy'. 'i could have been a famous singer if i had someone elses voice, but failures always sounded better, lets fuck it up boys make some noise'

Looks like a certain writer/publisher decided two months under a rock was enough for everyone to forget Dark Lit Press and Hedone Books, because she’s back posting cringe bullshit like nothing happened. If you or someone you love was affected, my inbox is still open.

I feel awful about having to ask for help, but we are suing our landlord for refusing to make repairs due to extensive water damage and active leaks in our apt. We have signed a lease & paid deposit on a new place, but need help with moving expenses. Any help or shares are greatly appreciated. xx

I had the pleasure of seeing #PRESSURE, the upcoming #BrendanFraser film from #FocusFeatures, & I don’t think I’ve ever found weather this thrilling. Seriously, this is a terrific film. Fraser is excellent as Eisenhower, & the whole cast is wonderful. I hope a lot of people give this one a watch.

The latest Hedone bullshit is exactly the reason orgs like the HWA *should* exist - to let people know about toxic, fraudulent practices in the publishing industry Writers shouldn't be expected to assume every publisher is a potential embezzler. The onus to investigate should not be on them 🧵

After a week of ridiculous Republican smears and Trump claiming that “very few people are going to be there,” you just made history. #NoKings
(around an image of the No Kings logo) IT’S OFFICIAL

Nearly 7 million people have attended today's peaceful protests, which makes No Kings Day the biggest single-day protest against tyranny in American history!

With more than 2,700 lawful and peaceful protests across all 50 states, No Kings Day was 14 times larger than both of Trump's presidential inaugurations (combined).

It can be, yes. The supernatural is scary, but desperation can be more visceral(many of us have felt it). The desperation that can come from the horrific can be scarier than whatever the catalyst is sometimes. A ghost or ghoul? Scary. Being trapped underground in a coffin? NOPE. #HorrorWriterschat

I write horror attempting to scare everyone—just in different tax brackets. The poor see themselves in the dark. The rich see what’s coming for them. Either way, nobody’s sleeping well. Hopefully. #HorrorWritersChat

I favor the folkloric ghosts—the ones whispered about behind church pews and in hollow places, passed down and patched over generations. Yet I love when an author peels that fabric back and lets the old haunt breathe through something new. #HorrorWritersChat

>Steps from the mist, boots caked in Ozark mud.< I write horror that seeps up from the soil and monsters that look too much like family. I hail from the haunted hills of southwest Missouri, and tonight my wraithful visage is a preacher’s ghost still clutching his sermon. #HorrorWritersChat

Age always bleeds into the work. Whether my characters are 16 or 60, they carry some echo of my own unease—fear of endings, fear of irrelevance, fear of being forgotten. Fear of forgetting. Horror gives those whispers a body. In that sense, yes, we’re always speaking our fears. #HorrorWritersChat

Coming-of-age doesn’t just belong to the young. Older characters can still have rites of passage—retirement, loss, confronting mortality, even facing the ghosts of choices they made decades ago. Their “becoming” may be smaller, subtler, but no less terrifying. #HorrorWritersChat
