I think which version appeals to you (she says with absolutely unearned and unreasonable in her crackpot theory) depends on which of those Jacks you knew when you were bigwheel small.

It’s called astigmatism. Maybe you’ve blurred of it.

And, at least for me, Kubrick’s portrayal of an abusive father is spot on.

Kubrick’s Jack exists disconnected from sympathy or love from the first shot. He is a prison as absolute as the hotel. You know you’ll be harmed when you get there, because already carry the bruises.

King gives you the slow dissolution of a man who progressively becomes monstrous through alcoholism and supernatural corruption. King humanizes the descent into abuse where Kubrick traps you with a man who is already the embodiment of dread beneath the brittleness of a socially acceptable surface.

I’ve been thinking about why The Shining is so perfect. It is a singular experience of spacial & relational dread. Angular wrongness and chromatic contamination on family trauma. The hotel itself is a malicious and unintelligible object. Where King says reality is wounded Kubrick says it is hostile.

Though I’ve seen North by Northwest maybe a dozen times, I know her name from Lloyd Cole. Rattlesnakes. m.youtube.com/watch?v=0imO...

The impossibly wonderful Eva Marie Saint has died at 102. Tonight you should watch North by Northwest, one of the foundational texts of my aesthetic life — in romance, sexuality, clothes, architecture, danger. A part of me has been trying to live inside that film ever since I first saw it.

Eva Marie Saint and Cary Grant look at each other from across a small divide in the train compartment

Eva smokes and looks out the window, perfect, suggestive but self-contained.

The two stand in the train corridor, Grant in sunglasses and Eva vulnerable but granite strong and key lit.

now look, this sucks, but the oddly smaller Eastern European model is BAD AND WRONG and I dislike that imagery. So it gets a star for making me deeply uncomfortable for ten seconds.

To add to your addition… We might need more schools, more infrastructure, etc. The paradox is that the “more” comes from inside the seemingly scarce world, not from some elsewhere. Not to be all theological up in here but it’s what the medieval scholastics called “the gift.”

No you’re right. I’m speaking overly simplistically in terms of money and resources.
