it’s early (again) but (once again) these brewers find a way to get back in it baseball is weird, but even given that variance—as a cubs fan it never seemed like we had a chance against these brewers—even with one of the best offenses & the best defense they just…keep doing it…over and over again

Shane’s problem is he’s a one trick pony. So he’ll only get more conservative as he gets older, bc that’s where he’s comfortable. Take Anthony Jeselnik. He’s even more offensive on paper. But layers his jokes in metatextual ironic depth, punching up not down. Shane’s not that smart or talented.

Shane’s not untalented—I’ve laughed at him before. But as a straight/white/cis guy, I understand that Shane is aiming his comedy directly at me & my straight teenage sons. Which means it’s my job to call out rape culture like his misogynistic monologue & to make sure my sons see it for what it is.

He could’ve made his unoriginal joke with so many other word choices. He specially chose “whore” bc he knew it would get attention. Since there’s nothing else extraordinary or even interesting about Shane’s comedy, he has to default to the lowest common engagement denominator to maintain relevance.

I’d say Shane Gillis calling women “whores” who dress for the gym was a catostphic failure in reading the room coming off the Cornell rape case… But it’s increasingly clear reading the room is exactly what he’s doing: engaging & hugging incel boys who could never get the Hot Gym Girl.
