The reason I'm so frustrated by this is that it's such a good example of the difference between having an LLM help you with something versus having it do something for you. It also implies that a literature review is some rote task like formatting or something and not a critical part of research.

I don't have a problem with researchers using LLMs to help them find literature, but oh my god actually *encouraging* them to NOT READ WHAT THEY FIND because another robot can just ensure they *won't get caught* is so messed up. "Ship research that holds up." OR YOU COULD JUST READ WHAT YOU CITE.

A common comment on my videos about LLM "hallucinations" is that this isn't as much of a problem because LLMs "cite their sources" now. This is a category error. Citing a source implies it was consulted. LLMs do not consult, even with RAG. A citation might be *included* but it's not *consulted*.

Anyway, I wish I could end this with a solution. I will say that I personally have de-emphasized grading as much as possible in my classes and am working as best I can to figure out how to convince students that they should want to learn. But this is imperfect and doesn't work across the board.
