Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is this Wednesday 9/30. This is an opportunity to learn about historical & ongoing injustices perpetrated against indigenous people, and think about what actions we can take to address them. Many thanks to Musqueam for putting this video together.

If you're using AI to create high-quality OER in thoughtful, attributable ways, that's great. My staff and I will continue to review resources and approve/reject as necessary to help maintain the health of the wider OER ecosystem, and we appreciate your help with that. Thanks kindly, Peter 6/6

3. Users must review AI-generated content thoroughly before submitting. Similar to above, attribution or skin in the EDU game will not excuse poor resource quality. You wouldn't believe how many people don't take out the "[put your name here]'s" and the "Sure, I can help you with that!"'s 5/6

OER Commons does not exist to enhance your SEO metrics, but we've been dealing with enough people who add things to OER Commons because we get 10k's of visits a day in the hopes that their commercial or non-edu service gets a bump in search results. Not cool, guys! 4/6

2. OER created with minimal attributable human involvement will be rejected outright. We've gotten many dubious quality submissions that smelled heavily of "Hey ChatGPT, make me a website that does _________." If your name isn't on it or you've never made OER before, that's suspicious. 3/6

First, OER created w/AI must be labeled as such by users with a short description of how. This is to help us as admins understand what we're looking at, and help you as users decide whether or not the resource aligns with your use goals. It doesn't have to be fancy, just accurate! 2/6

Starting Aug 1, we're adjusting our requirements for OER created with AI on OER Commons. Read the official announcement here: help.oercommons.org/support/disc... Here are the highlights: Attribution! Human involvement! Editorial standards! Buckle up, we're in for a ride. 1/6

But anyhow, I digress. My point is, the AI knife cuts both ways in education, and we all benefit from remembering that educators (and administrators!) are NOT somehow immune to AI misuse versus the learners under their charge. Just some food for thought.

If sth. AI co-created doesn't run afoul of our collection policy, we flag it when we spot it to help users make informed decisions. This link shows resources where either a) we've identified or b) the authors have disclosed AI use in the work's creation. We're gonna try to make it more obvious.

The librarians at @oercommons.bsky.social do TONS to make sure that objectively bad AI OER doesn't find its way into the collection so that our users don't have to deal with it (although I'm sure we miss some - lmk). Not to say that AI use automatically means rejection from the collection; though:

Thinking about 2022/2023 when panic arose about *the idea* of students using ChatGPT to write their papers like it was the end of education. As someone who reviews submissions to OER Commons, I promise that poorly edited AI-generated OER is just as bad & deserves more attention than it gets.

Getting a lot of emails from different orgs saying happy holidays, so voila. As you can see, I am an artist whose talents are wasted in librarianship. :) OER Commons is open, but our responses may be delayed because we're all so, so tired, and taking much needed rest. We hope you are too!
Blue text that reads "Happy Holidays from OER Commons Librarians! See you next year." there is also a blue smiley face, and a cc-by mark in the bottom right corner. The text overlays an image, obviously made in MS paint, of three yellow stars of various sizes and a green oval with red outline. It is festive.
