It's also why they're using the word "alignment" a lot again. One of the big themes of the book is that the goal should be to find a way to make an AI's desires align with what is good for humanity because we will, by definition, be too stupid to impede it once it takes off.

Specifically, the super refers to greater than human level intelligence because that's the more interesting/relevant part. What happens when humans aren't the smartest beings on the planet anymore? Whether it's created via biology, pedagogy, drugs, or circuits isn't strictly relevant.

For context, the term "superintelligence" comes from a book by Nick Bostrom where he gave broad overviews of philosophy related to AI that had been published by 2014. It was a solid primer that a lot of tech bros misunderstood then took a gospel. It recently got picked up again by Rationalists.

If he cared, he'd recuse himself like he did in that case where his cop buddy was charged with rape. Van Houten clearly isn't able to separate his own feelings about rape from his duties as DA. Better to give it to someone who thinks rape is bad.

Amazon has a minimum reserve bid for advertisers instead of actually doing a reverse auction. If no bid meets that minimum, they sometimes run an Amazon ad instead to fill the space. I assume you'll get 50 AWS ads per hour if they don't tweak it.

Yes! Enabling rapists, siding with them, dismissing women, and failing to intervene are very real problems. The culture of impunity is what enables the rapists to get away with it.

One of the most fucked up numbers I've seen on this front is that only 1 in 7 college students who identified a situation where they should have stepped in—by their own standards of what defines such a situation—have done so every time it happened. People who know when and how to help, aren't.

I completely agree that expelling them isn't enough. But even that small, insufficient act would greatly reduce how many women rapists can prey upon.

There absolutely are far too many women victims of sexual assault on college campuses because too many men on college campuses are rapists and other abusers. But I've seen estimates as high as 8 victims on average per rapist among college serial rapists. Not stopping them after their first is huge.

For the record, research on campus rape refutes that to some degree. The average number of victims an individual rapist has is significantly greater than 1.0. A majority of rape on college campuses would be prevented if rapists were expelled after their first offense.

When the MeToo hashtag started, it told people to ask the women in their life how old they were the first time an adult man creeped on them. The point was every woman had an answer they could vividly remember and it was usually 12 or younger. Every woman has a story. That's how omnipresent it is.

He has covered up for a cop rapist he was supposed to prosecute but didn't because he worked with the guy too closely. Yes, recusing himself was the legally correct thing to do since he'd obviously protect his buddy. But the fact that he's buddies with a rapist is bad.
