The Work Is Done When We Are Dead, Jade Wallace’s sophomore poetry collection, considers work in all its many forms, with a particular interest in types of labour that are unpaid, underappreciated, or even entirely unrecognized. Wallace’s poems, by turns frantic and playful, lyric and experimental, probe at how the dif

Last not least of the 3 blurbs for my forthcoming poetry collection comes from Aaron Schneider, who writes, but teaches, runs a mag & a chapbook press & probably does more things I don't even know about. Here's what he had to say about The Work Is Done When We Are Dead @guernicaeditions.bsky.social:

But Wallace doesn’t claim to have some sapient, definitive answer to the question of work’s role in our routines, rituals, bodies, & relationships. And they certainly aren’t asking to be rewarded for propagating their hard-earned wisdom.

I love this concept for a folio: unpublished poems you removed from your forthcoming book. For me, that was "All Night I Stare at the TV Screen." I wrote it after weeks watching & reading about 'Jennifer Fairgate' & the strange phenomenon of fixating on the deaths of strangers.

Re: solutions, obviously there's a lot more that would need to happen, but I really think part of it is for people to a) read the venues that publish reviews and b) read and engage with the reviews sections the way they do other sections. Discussing, sharing, showing a modicum of interest.

Hear hear. Would also love to see more space for reviews that are about contributing to conversations on art and the issues books engage with, rather than mainly praising authors and sounding like ad copy.
