I dream of living in a world where the media just reports “Trump writes memo falsely claiming he has the power to…” instead of “Trump issues executive order that…” Accepring the framing that the President is a king issuing edicts is such a disservice to readers, and democracy.

Unless they publish all of Mitch McConnell’s trading history showing all the insider trading he has been doing the past 3 months with Senate info, I’m not going to believe he’s actually still actually alive.

This cannot be something a civilian law enforcement agent is allowed to wear in the US — and an agency that has a culture that tolerates this cannot be saved.

Really interesting watching the Republican Party embrace the argument that federal agents can kick down your door without a warrant, and also that if you happen to own a gun they can just kill you for that. I thought their whole brand was spreading fear Dems were going to do that.

It would take a two-word amendment to 42 U.S.C. § 1983 to subject ICE agents and other federal law enforcement officers to the same liability for constitutional violations that local and state officers currently face. If Congress actually cared about what it's seeing, it could pass that overnight.

Can at least ONE reporter who interviews police chiefs PLEASE ask if their officers will arrest ICE agents when they witness them violating laws or violating civil and constitutional rights? “Are you fine with just standing by if the criminals have badges and guns?” Protect and serve, or quit.

yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.

I hate to make predictions like this, but after Mamdani is in office Trump is going to send ICE to hassle Nannies in NYC around preschool drop off and pickup. It would be like targeting a Home Depots elsewhere as it’s where a lot of immigrants are. And it would create tons of pain for NYC liberals.

So NVDA, the poster child for the AI boom beats and has strong guidance and investors use it to sell. Not really a great market sign for the “it’s not a bubble and has a long way to run” crowd. If we start to see more data center financings run into trouble, this could get really ugly, fast.

Lots of paranoia about a mayoral candidate who wants to increase taxes on people’s SECOND million dollars of annual income. I mean sure, nobody wants to pay an extra $20,000 in taxes, but if you make $2mm and it’s maintenance it so other people can live in the city it’s a good investment. Grow up

Trump is panicking because the economic numbers are giving a recession vibe. From the Chief Economist at Moody's.
The economy is on the precipice of recession. That’s the clear takeaway from last week’s economic data dump. Consumer spending has flatlined, construction and manufacturing are contracting, and employment is set to fall. And with inflation on the rise, it is tough for the Fed to come to the rescue.

Unemployment remains low, but that’s only because labor force growth has gone sideways. The foreign-born workforce is shrinking, and labor force participation is declining. Telling is the economy-wide hiring freeze, particularly for recent graduates, and the decline in hours worked.

It’s no mystery why the economy is struggling; blame increasing U.S. tariffs and highly restrictive immigration policy. The tariffs are cutting increasingly deeply into the profits of American companies and the purchasing power of American households. Fewer immigrant workers means a smaller economy.

Any notion that the economic data misrepresents the reality of how the economy is performing is way off base. There are revisions to the data, even big revisions, but they universally say the economy is doing worse. That’s because it is.

BTW, the DOGE cuts are a key factor in the revisions—not because BLS has cut staff, although that can’t help, but because the government often reports payrolls to BLS late. It didn’t matter when government employment was stable, but now that it’s declining, the cuts are picked up in the revisions.

A 17-year-old high school student in Dayton, Ohio, has been fined and placed under house arrest after authorities discovered he had hacked into the city’s outdated traffic control system and quietly fixed the timing of several major intersections.
Kameron Price, a self-taught coder and robotics club member, reportedly used a Raspberry Pi and a decommissioned school-issued Chromebook to gain access to the municipal traffic grid. Over the course of several weeks, he rewrote the timing logic for at least five major lights along West 3rd Street—drastically reducing backups during rush hour and syncing green lights to reduce stop-and-go congestion.
“He didn’t disable anything or cause danger,” said a traffic engineer speaking on condition of anonymity. “Honestly, his code was more efficient than what we were using.”
But city officials said the changes violated multiple laws, including unauthorized access to a government system and interference with public infrastructure. Kameron was cited under a local ordinance pertaining to unauthorized modification of municipal services—a misdemeanor typically reserved for utility tampering.
According to Kameron’s parents, he initially took it on as a side project after watching his bus get stuck at the same broken intersection every morning for weeks. “It would take longer to go three blocks than it did to get across town,” his mom explained. “He got tired of watching everyone waste gas and time just sitting there.”
Public reaction has been overwhelmingly in Kameron’s favor. A video of the intersection running smoother than it has in years has gone viral, and a local radio host dubbed him the Subway Surfer of traffic flow. Online petitions calling for the fine to be dropped have already surpassed 50,000 signatures.
“Honestly, give the kid a job,” one commenter wrote. “He’s doing more for this city than whoever programmed those lights in 1998.”
