Seems like a good day for gazing up the Virgin River in Zion Canyon. Memories of a fun hiking day last winter on beyond and above Angel's Landing...the snow we got into is hidden from this angle. Zion National Park #nationalparks #hiking #trails #Zion #Utah #winter
The Virgin River runs through the canyon, with clear winter water showing greens in the middle and oranges in the shallows. Boulders flank the banks and canyon walls rise in the background under a cloud-streaked blue sky.

In the early 1700s Creek and Yamasee raiders, allied with the British, captured Native people to sell as slaves. By 1763, when Spain gave Florida to Britain, the Tequesta population had collapsed, and the last families were taken to Cuba.

Spain reached Florida in 1513, and a short-lived Spanish Jesuit mission opened at the mouth of the Miami River in 1567. Disease spread through the Tequesta.

The Tequesta people lived on Biscayne Bay for at least 2,000 years. They fished, gathered conch and turtles, and buried their dead along the shore. Biscayne National Park protects the bay and the keys that were Tequesta territory.

A waterfall below the Christine Falls Bridge in Mount Rainier National Park rushes diagonally through a narrow rocky gorge into a turquoise-blue pool. Dark gray rock walls covered with green moss, ferns, and small plants surround the cascading whitewater. Sunlight illuminates the rushing water and patches of vegetation. The scene feels powerful and refreshing.

Bombers and artillery left thousands of unexploded shells in the ground, and cleanup continues. In 1968 Congress returned some land to the tribe and made part of it the park's South Unit. Since 1976 the Oglala Sioux Tribe and the Park Service have run the South Unit together.

In 1942 the Army took 341,726 acres of the Pine Ridge Reservation for bombing practice. About 125 Oglala Lakota families, including Wounded Knee survivor Dewey Beard, got as little as 10 days to leave. They lost homes, pasture and unharvested crops.

The Lakota call this land Makȟóšiča, “land of badness.” People lived in the Badlands for more than 11,000 years, and Lakota bands moved in during the 1700s. A treaty in 1868 promised this country to the Sioux Nation, but in 1877 Congress took the Black Hills. 🧵

In March 1851 the Mariposa Battalion, a militia funded by California, entered the valley to attack Chief Tenaya's band. Many Ahwahneechee were marched out to a reservation. Many escaped and returned, but the battalion came back in 1852 and killed Tenaya's son.

The Ahwahneechee called the valley Ahwahnee, “gaping mouth.” They lived in Yosemite for at least 4,000 years and kept the valley open with regular small fires, which helped the black oaks and meadows. Acorns from those oaks were traded as far as the Central Valley and Mono Lake. 🧵
