The Tequesta people lived on Biscayne Bay for at least 2,000 years. They fished, gathered conch and turtles, and buried their dead along the shore. Biscayne National Park protects the bay and the keys that were Tequesta territory.

A waterfall below the Christine Falls Bridge in Mount Rainier National Park rushes diagonally through a narrow rocky gorge into a turquoise-blue pool. Dark gray rock walls covered with green moss, ferns, and small plants surround the cascading whitewater. Sunlight illuminates the rushing water and patches of vegetation. The scene feels powerful and refreshing.

People lived in Big Bend for at least 8,000 years. Early residents roasted agave in stone-lined ovens. Later, Chisos, Jumano, Mescalero Apache, Lipan Apache and Comanche peoples lived in or crossed this land. Comanche war parties used a trail to the Rio Grande. 🧵

The Lakota call this land Makȟóšiča, “land of badness.” People lived in the Badlands for more than 11,000 years, and Lakota bands moved in during the 1700s. A treaty in 1868 promised this country to the Sioux Nation, but in 1877 Congress took the Black Hills. 🧵

The Ahwahneechee called the valley Ahwahnee, “gaping mouth.” They lived in Yosemite for at least 4,000 years and kept the valley open with regular small fires, which helped the black oaks and meadows. Acorns from those oaks were traded as far as the Central Valley and Mono Lake. 🧵

Tuesday evening at Blue Lake in the North Cascades. The last sunlight lit up the rocky spires of the Liberty Bell Group, with golden larches surrounding the lake. I was really glad I stayed long enough to see the mountains light up like this. 🍂🏔️ #GoldenLarches #LandscapePhotography
Jagged granite spires of the Liberty Bell Group glow orange in the last evening sunlight above Blue Lake in the North Cascades. Golden larches and dark evergreen trees cover the rocky slopes below. The calm, deep blue lake reflects the forest and a large mountain on the right. A tall golden larch frames the left foreground beneath a pale blue sky. The scene feels peaceful and still.

The Southern Paiute called Zion Canyon Mukuntuweap, “straight canyon.” Paiute bands farmed corn and squash along the Virgin River, hunted deer and bighorn sheep, and gathered pine nuts and yucca. Ancestral Puebloan sites in the park date to about AD 500 to 1200. 🧵

Federal agents swarmed a protest encampment today, arresting a dozen people and allowing contractors to remove a live protester from, then cut down, an ancient, giant cottonwood "Grandmother Tree" to make way for border wall construction. Protesters had been at the site near Lochiel, AZ for 71 days.
