The AI disaster to science has reached my desk. I am reviewing a paper that seems to be written by AI, the data look fake, and all co-authors except the first one don't seem to be real people.

Ooof... this paper on AI use in academic writing, based on submissions to the journal Organization Science. Sadly agrees with my anecdotal observations as an editor. AI-tinged submissions have increased, and readability and quality have decreased. pubsonline.informs.org/doi/full/10....

It's so difficult to enter a different field. With today's rejection, I've tried 4 climate history and 4 archaeology proposals, all with excellent historians/archaeologists, but all unsuccessful. These discouraging experiences are telling me to stick to safe, single-field projects. But I'm stubborn.

Last night I had a dream that my NSF proposal was funded. Then I woke up realizing it was a dream. But I grabbed my phone and logged in to research.gov to check anyway. And yep, still pending... Maybe I'm thinking about this stuff way too much.

Belated #microscopicMonday. A region of suppressed growth in a hackberry tree from a local forest in Urbana, IL. This is a piece of deadwood so we still only have a floating chronology and can't pinpoint the time yet. #dendro 🧪
Close-up microscopic view of a cross section of a hackberry tree, showing the annual rings. On the left we see some tree rings with normal sizes (1 - 3 mm in width). In the middle we see a row of 8 very narrow rings (0.1 mm or less) signifying suppressed growth.
