"A crucial aspect of our strategy has been moving away from the traditional, and often counterproductive, expectation that scientists must personally drive technology transfer while carrying out cutting-edge research. "

It's definitely a different case. I'm still leaning towards against training commercial models on copyrighted content, but it would be a lot more acceptable if the models did not produce plagiarism en masse. Which we don't know how to do (at least for now).

The industry will argue that they are not liable for what users do. Many lawsuits are still pending, but I'm pretty sure they will end one of two ways: - slap on the wrist with a small fine, - behind-doors undisclosed settlement. Especially in the US where the whole system is complicit.

Once again, this is why a lot of people hate anything even slightly related to AI. The industry lacks even the smallest shred of ethics, politicians do not care to make them accountable, and we turn a blind eye to this because it's "accelerating" research or whatever.

I am running a study on how computer vision researchers perceive dual-use risks of the field. If you work in CV, and would like to help us, the survey takes less than 3min. Reply or DM me for the link. You will be helping us a lot! Reposts are much appreciated 🙏

I am tired of having to pretend that the value of studying my discipline solely rests on the "marketable skills" we teach. Sometimes things are just worth knowing and doing because they make your life bigger and richer.

"If OpenAI and Anthropic really want to help advance science, there is one obvious way they can do so: They can spend a tiny fraction of their vast fortunes to fund the kind of humble but essential research that’s increasingly starved for resources." (That they don't, and won't, says it all)

In my opinion, the big counter-argument is that the telescope has been (forcefully and even unlawfully) built with pieces contributed by everyone, and could not exist otherwise. Therefore the only acceptable path forward is to make it a common.

Yeah the booklet would have been a lot better. Conference apps can be good, but Cvent is not. It's slow, the UI is terrible and it crashes on my phone when listing sessions. And the ECCV website is not better. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nicolas Audebert @nshaud.bsky.social · 12/09/2026

I appreciate that someone asked the ethical implications of this kind of research (not so much the answer). The "promising future" of having everything I do recorded so "an AI" can help me improve felt 100% dystopian.

It's even worse because you won't get better by using an LLM to do the work for you. 🥲

Nicolas Audebert @nshaud.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Or you want to remain skilled at your job. Evidence seems to be consolidating that offloading work to LLMs has a significant cognitive impact. In the end, you might be worse off if you integrate over a whole career.

Generating images with BigGAN and... yeah, we've progressed a lot since 2019.
Picture generated with the BigGAN model. Baby in a bathtub, with eggshell white tiles and some kind of foam in the tub. The baby's facial features are weird, with rendering artifacts that make its appearance uncanny. The baby's right arm is blurry and mixes with the white foamish water.

this is only stuff you can do on open models not just open weights, but fully open models with open datasets this stuff is extremely important, and we know next to nothing about it
Matlin and Chakraborty designed a study » around inf'yence functions, a technique that estimates how much any single training document - an article, post, or page a model trained on - shaped how the model answered a particular benchmark question.
Add those estimates up across the data, and you can see which kinds of writing - literary, technical, and so on - support a given ability in the model. But that holds only if you can confirm the model actually trained on the documents in question.
