A quarter for your thoughts? 🪙 We think Vera C. Rubin is a great choice to be honored with a quarter... and with an observatory! Rubin was an accomplished astronomer who provided the first convincing evidence of dark matter, influencing a new subfield of astrophysics. 🧪🔭
A black and white photo of astronomer Vera Rubin standing at the eyepiece of a large telescope. The background is a teal-hued landscape in the dry Chilean mountains. In the bottom third, text reads "U.S. Mint American Women Quarters Program. Dr. Vera Rubin is now on a U.S. quarter!" To the right of the text is an image of the Vera Rubin quarter.

A once-mighty #NASA astrophysics fleet—revolutionizing our view of the cosmos—is now being dismantled before our eyes. ❌ TESS, Chandra, Fermi, IXPE, UVEX… ❌ 20+ missions canceled, gutted, or abandoned. ❌ A generation of discovery, erased. This isn’t belt-tightening. It’s self-inflicted blindness.🔭

Really think we could use moments like these ('biosignatures') to show how scientific ideas are proposed, tested, debated, and refined - to broader audiences. Whether we’re talking space, climate change, or pandemics, I think it's good to build trust with the public by showing this transparency.

Congrats to @desisurvey.bsky.social - it's looking more & more like dark energy isn't Einstein's cosmological constant! If you've woken up to the news & are searching for the publications, they don't appear to be on arxiv 🤷‍♀️ but they are online. 🔭 #cosmology 🧪 ℹ️: data.desi.lbl.gov/public/paper...
A graph of the evolution of the dark energy (vertical axis) as a function of time (redshift on the horizontal axis) - showing an offset from the cosmological constant (a flat horizontal line). Here is the figure caption from the paper:
FIG. 12. Comparison of the constraints on the equation of
state of dark energy using the CPL parametrization and a bin-
ning reconstruction approach, using DESI+CMB+DESY5.
The solid green line shows the best-fit w(z) based on w0 and
wa inference and the green contours around it represent the
68% and 95% confidence intervals. We also show in blue the
constraints from the binning approach [47], with the hori-
zontal bars indicating the bin width (which is fixed) and the
vertical bars representing the 1σ error. Additionally, we in-
clude in gray the 1D posterior for each binning parameter.
The ΛCDM limit corresponds to the horizontal gray dashed
line.

Supernova Remnant E0102-72.3 |NASA|
This supernova remnant was produced by a massive star that exploded in a nearby galaxy called the Small Magellanic Cloud.
This supernova remnant was produced by a massive star that exploded in a nearby galaxy called the Small Magellanic Cloud. X-rays from Chandra (blue and purple) have helped astronomers confirm that most of the oxygen in the universe is synthesized in massive stars. The amount of oxygen in the E0102-72.3 ring shown here is enough for thousands of solar systems. This image also contains optical data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope in Chile (red and green).
