@lauracummingart.bsky.social Mauritshuis on tour in Madrid at Thyssen-Bournemisza. Yesterday at The Prado I had a wonderful chat about Caravaggio & Velasquez with a guide, and attempted to recommend The Vanishing Man (hope it’s published in Spain). Any tips on reviving gallery leg fatigue?!

Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, absolutely bonkers bonanza of art with not a great deal of curation(?) and no paper map, a couple of total bangers - inc. Caravaggio St Catherine, plus, at the moment, a substantial selection on loan from Mauritshuis! Hello Vermeer and Coorte.

You’d have to be in thrall to the narrowest, most blinkered model of economics to believe that axeing Free Thinking and Thinking Allowed made sense. The amount of goodwill programmes like this earn from the BBC’s core supporters is way out of proportion to the pennies they cost to make.

My dream was to try and see my faves in each - now I’ve covered the Velasquez / Goya glut I can ease off a bit! Takes a while to get used to no pics but actually better experience and there was a well illustrated book with just photos- all galleries should do this!

Yeah it’s on my list- I have best part of two more days so hoping to fit in Reina Sofia as well but legs might mean highlights only.

Radio 4 hasn’t done anything intelligent since it axed The Film Programme. Terrible decision.

Haven’t been on the socials as I’m in Spain with piss-poor post-Brexit roaming deal, but I went to The Prado today, something I’ve wanted to do for about 30 years. And damn, my feet are killing me, but wow.
Overwhelmed author of this sky.No photos allowed inside, which makes more a better experience, so here’s
an inadequately small Bosch This was a poster and this isn’t available as a postcard yet Caravaggio’s Ecce Homo

To Spain visiting a pal next week. Short trips Alicante, Valencia & Madrid. I haven’t been abroad since b4 Covid. Daunted, mainly as I don’t do swimsuits & pal insisting on beach. On a tight budget. Any tips for quieter places? (particularly Madrid. Want to go to Prado etc). #travelsky

Listening to the Backlisted Summer special, strikes me that it’s about different kinds of male/female relationships. The comedian bits are perhaps the heart and the rest-the person that shaped. I do need to read it again. I don’t think audio would work as well. Nothing like C Chambers. #thepalmhouse

Working on a small piece of research/writing at the moment which is critical of AI in history/humanities research/writing/teaching. Keen to hear of any experience/knowledge which might feed in and of any place where the output might be welcomed. 🗃️

Is (Tokyu) Hands still trading? And don’t forget the 100 yen shops. (Much like pound shops, prices now adjusted for inflation) good luck with the humidity! I was there at this time of year in 2001. 🥵

He never got the pacing right. Goes too fast, hard to play along at home (and is it me, or are more questions getting longer?)

Amol’s tick of saying “Well Done” (which I keep hearing in the voice of Derek Jameson) every time they get one right is even more annoying than when he asks them if they’ve enjoyed themselves. #universitychallenge

✨John Ruskin described Lincoln Cathedral as “out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles.” Its grandeur is unmatched, but the medieval Romanesque details - like the west front door - feel truly otherworldly, as if from another planet. 🪐

As one of the few big names that played my local theatre, and did a “clean” show, I think his was the first live comedy show I ever saw (aged about 11, with my dad).
