As someone who **once** got to surprise their partner with flowers at the gate prior to 9/11 I’m considering getting PreCheck just for this.

Realizing people are unlikely to mistake my writing for LLMs —no matter how many times I reread drafts I usually miss a doubled word and often include phasing which works fine in spoken english but is awkward when read. I wonder if Pangram would agree

A reminder: Google will never call you. If someone says they are Google on the phone it is a scam. If you ever get a call from someone claiming to be from your bank, hangup and call the number on the back of your card. Incoming numbers and CallerID can be easily spoofed.

I used to create open source tools to scratch and itch and hoping someone else would find them useful. Now I create a new tools almost weekly, post them on GitHub and don’t care. It’s not my job to convince everyone they are missing out on useful shit.

I’m calling it now. LLMs will cause cursive to return. How it’ll go: As we demand students show they’re not cheating with AI, hand-written tests and assignments will make a comeback. Because print is slower than cursive, we will start teaching it to kids again.

It's wild that in 2004 @daringfireball.bsky.social synthesized an ascii-based spec for annotating text and now I (and millions of others) use backticks when writing. Not just code but prose too. Every single day. At some level, I often think in Markdown. Yikes.

It's amazing how everything depends on GitHub and so much breaks when it's even a little bit unavailable. Today's example, JSON schema loading from jsonschemastore.org via yaml-language-server / vscode-json-language-server. No auto-complete for me!

Have you ever wondered why if you save an empty Rust file your editor might add a newline? I thought it was a @zed.dev bug, but turns out it's cause Zed by-default enables format_on_save and rust-analyzer. When rust-analyzer invokes rustfmt and that actually adds the newline. But why?

At a bar with "Mango Cart" on tap. It's amazing how fast this has fallen out of the lexicon. Juul mango pods (along with Creme, Fruit, Cucumber) were discontinued (US in 2019, Canada 2020) but before that were **super** popular with kids. The beer is a about a literal food cart that sells mango.

Mass. Supreme Judicial Court slips opinion in Attorney General v Mystic Valley Regional Chart School. tldr: Massachusetts charter schools are agencies of the Commonwealth and thus subject to Public Records law (MGL Chap 66 § 10). www.mass.gov/doc/attorney...
SJC slip text: “GEORGES, J. This case requires us to decide whether a
"[Commonwealth charter school," as defined by G. L. c. 71, $ 89 (g), is subject to the Massachusetts public records law,
G. L. c. 66, S 10. Mystic Valley Regional Charter School (Mystic Valley) contends that it is not and, on that basis, refused to comply with multiple public records requests. After the Attorney General commenced this enforcement action, a
Superior Court judge (motion judge) granted judgment on the pleadings in the Attorney General's favor, concluding that Mystic Valley is a governmental entity obligated to respond to the requests.
For the reasons explained below, we conclude that Commonwealth charter schools, including Mystic Valley, are
"agencies" subject to the public records law. As a matter of statutory interpretation, a Commonwealth charter school qualifies as an "authority established by the general court to serve a public purpose," G. L. c. 4, S 7, Twenty-sixth, and therefore falls squarely within the class of governmental
entities expressly covered by the public records law. Accordingly, we affirm the judgment.”

We all deserve snow days. ⛄️ Any administrator pushing for 7hrs of zoom meetings for kids should be fired. Requiring employees to work during a state of emergency (especially w/o childcare) should be illegal for non-emergency jobs. It’s not hard: don’t expect work when things close for snow. ❄️

Sigh. Neither of these programs should exist. Citizens should be treated equally. Full stop. Airline security is not an Amazon Prime or Costco membership. While we’re at it, abolish the security theater around liquids, shoe removal, pocket knives and scale back the budget accordingly.

Why do none of the mainstream editors let you specify an arbitrary git ref to diff against? I know tools can diff two arbitrary commits in a compare view but I want this inline while editing. It appears VSCode, JetBrains and Zed only support inline diff against HEAD.

I found something where current LLMs struggle. Task: Update a Lua 5.4.0 patch set to work with Lua 5.4.3. Perhaps repeatedly generating patch tool patches for patching patches is just too much patching.

First day feedback on ChatGPT Codex CLI. It seems very oriented towards providing a numerical menu of next actions. Which seems ok? Nothing wrong with reducing my turn to "2" to trigger the second option in a list but it's definitely got a totally different flavor than Claude Code or Gemini CLI.

Using an Intel Macbook from 2020 isn't cool but ChatGPT Desktop only supporting Apple Silicon makes me sad. Yes, backwards compatibility is hard. Yes it has diminishing returns. But a web app in an Electron wrapper with cloud-hosted inference is not a compelling reason to upgrade. (Claude works).
The macOS desktop app is only available for macOS 14+ with Apple Silicon (M1 or better). Access to the ChatGPT app may depend on your company's IT policies.

Google's gemini-flash-lite is amazing and cheap. Task: image of a stamp, return json with postage rate, short description, keywords, etc. Image input token cost is 258 tokens per 768x768px tile (2-6 tiles per image for me). Processing 1028 images was ~$0.11 ~100 images per penny. Wow.
