This is so great! The University Health Network of Toronto built housing for 51 high-risk homeless people, and their emergency room visits dropped in half. The group is now increasing the rooms to 300. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ont-…

Coding agents reduce software development to a simple matter of: * specifying requirements * verifying correctness and quality * maintaining and operating software you didn't write As we all know, those have always been the easiest, most well-understood parts of the craft, so everything is fine!

I needed a goat-apple-opera break from grant-writing and I bet you do too.
A white goat wish her head thrown back, chewing an apple, but sort of looks like she's singing. There are several other goats in the background, one other one obviously eating an apple. Four goats, two white and two black, all eating apples with their heads back and their mouths open like they are singing opera. Two goats, one white and one black, look like they are singing with their heads back as they eat red apples. There's a tall wooden fence in the background and green grass under their feet, as well as several other goats in the background.

I'm guessing the AI crawlers have finally reached my site too. I decided to update some stuff and was really confused with everything breaking with random 500 errors. Turns out my Forgejo server has been under very heavy load. Gonna have to look into setting up one of those crawler mazes.

A Canary in the Crypto Mine: Defeating Stack Protection in a GPU Secure Coprocessor
A widely sold datacenter-class accelerator (the NVIDIA “CMP 170HX”) is the same die as a flagship A100 but is fuse-crippled on three commercial axes: SM math rate (throttled to 1/32), memory capacity (10 GB instead of 80 GB), and PCIe link (Gen1 instead of Gen4). We show that all three caps are software-defeatable from a rooted-but-otherwise-unprivileged host, with no signing key, no debug fuse, and no physical access. The root enabler is arbitrary code execution in the GPU’s Heavy Secure (HS) Falcon mode. The HS break does not depend on the value of the stack canary: the stack-protector’s reference word lives in writable memory reachable by the same data overflow it is meant to detect, so secrecy and entropy are irrelevant. Because the microcode is deterministic, we emulate it offline and author an overflow payload that is a valid continuation image, so the victim function passes its own canary check and returns into our chain. The economic consequence is that differentiation the business model treats as hardware-permanent is, for the three axes we defeated, only firmware-gated. Three further axes (PCIe Gen3, on-die ECC, runtime HBM retiming) resisted our attempts; we report this without claiming they are truly unbreakable, since we do not fully understand the relevant fuses or initialization. The HS code-execution bug is a regression present in the newer open-kernel-modules-era booter and absent in an older one, so version currency is not a security gradient, and an open host driver did not imply an audited signed booter. Measured gains: roughly 31–62x compute, 8x capacity, 2x link. We distill four transferable findings.

Thinking that I might start adding something like this to more of the software I write.
Text that reads:

# Provenance

This software is proudly and fondly written, maintained, used - and most crucially - understood by real human beings. While we can't personally attest to the provenance of every line of code ever contributed, the vast majority of the codebase has certainly been developed without the aid of large language models and other stochastic 'intelligence'.

While the GPLv3 may not guarantee warranty 'of any kind', you can at least use this software in the comforting knowledge that its veracity and coherence is vouched for by sentient intelligence with skin in the game and a reputation to uphold.

# Contribution guidelines

We expect contributors to adhere to the ethos of the project.

Source code is not an artifact, an intermediate representation, nor a bothersome annoyance whose creation is to be offloaded to metal and transistors. Source code is a source of truth - the only source of truth that constitutes this software project - and it deserves to be understood and curated by the accountable and reasoned mind of a human being.

Please refrain from contributing changes that you have not personally understood and instigated the authorship of. We do not expect perfection, but we do expect you to personally understand your own motivations and decisions.
