More than half a century either a steakhouse, seafood, or sushi. Fenced off now against transients and thieves, windows dark and derelict. It is night, I am still 17 and standing behind the building waiting for my ride. what should I feed the vampires of memory silver steaks #haiku

Dusk in Arizona. Emerson said, if I remember right, that no one owns the landscape.

Canvassing for the candidate in Arizona City. Humble homes set down in desert flats, low mountains far off. My knocks mostly ignored. Growing dark. Swing by campaign office in Casa Grande, pee in clogged toilet. Sorry. An open cafe, iced coffee and cake. Man soberly studying is my friend but doesn’t know it.

When I go through my TL these days, some lines from Housman come to mind. Waking up after a bender, he says “The world, it was the old world yet, And I was I, my things were wet, And nothing else remained to do But begin the game anew.” Maybe I should follow fewer political accounts. #poetry

(1/x) There is a poem by Swinburne the first line of which is, “Out of the golden remote wild west where the sea without shore is…” He was adapting to English the dactylic hexameter, the meter of Greek and Latin epic verse. I think that particular line is beautiful, #poetry #classics

I know that many people are feeling uncertainty about the future because of the war with Iran. People wonder should they buy an EV, are mortgage rates going to rise, what does this mean for investments in the UAE. It’s hard to predict, but these are some recent indicators : (1/x)

The first snowfall of the season, blossom sized flakes falling languidly and melting on the ground, a premature snow fall delicate as lace, rapidly melting. ❄️ ― Joyce carol Oates The year started with the snowfall it brings welcome light to this darkest time of the year. 🤍 #Januarty2026 #fresh
Heavy snowfall turns the landscape gray and white, you can barely see the neighboring house from behind the yard trees, and the forest in the background is just a gray hint.

It’s been more than 10 years since I’ve read Moby Dick. My memory of it has holes, but I feel there must be some scene where Ishmael sees with complete clarity that Ahab is in fact barking mad, and he looks at his shipmates, laughs nervously, and says, “We’re all doomed, aren’t we?” #literature

Speaking of #cats . A couple of months ago I was standing in my yard taking a picture of a hummingbird. A tiny ant crawls up my leg and bites me on the calf. Ouch. I go into the house and am showing the picture to my wife when the cat walks up and licks me on that exact spot where I was bitten. 1/

By the time James Hamilton Hay painted 'The Falling Star,' (1909) many European artists had popularised the idea a painting could function as a visual poem, something to be felt rather than read literally - a falling star was a common device in Victorian and Edwardian art.

Poem: Appointment on the ledge #poetry
Appointment on the ledge

How sweet was summer’s song,
Until it all went wrong.
Each day the brassy sun
Now beats a brazen gong.

But autumn makes a fool
Of children at the pool.
They splash and play one day,
The next they frown in school.

For all things have a time,
A stairway they must climb,
An appointment they must keep
Upon the ledge, to leap.

Afterwards

I get up
From the cafe table
And go out through the swinging doors
Absorbed

And see outside everything is still

—suddenly: a house that stares
From wide open windows
   A dog that barks
   Far off
—Good god!

When I was young I was indifferent to flowers. Then in my 50s a blue bergamot blossom in my overgrown yard opened the azure gates, and I’ve loved them ever since. The flowers in front of the ocotillo are Caesalpinia Pulcherrima, a common ornamental here in Arizona, native to the Caribbean. #flowers

Earth Day Poetry 2: Mary Oliver again, in"I Looked Up," linking the stunning, exciting, mutual spotting of a red tailed hawk as touching something larger in the universe.
I Looked Up

I looked up and there it was
among the green branches of the pitchpines –

thick bird,
a ruffle of fire trailing over the shoulders and down the back –

color of copper, iron, bronze –
lighting up the dark branches of the pine.

What misery to be afraid of death.
What wretchedness, to believe only in what can be proven.

When I made a little sound
it looked at me, then it looked past me.

Then it rose, the wings enormous and opulent,
and, as I said, wreathed in fire.

– Mary Oliver
